African heritage sites threatened as sea-level rise accelerates

Michalis Vousdoukas et al.

Summary: Many African heritage sites are currently at risk from rising sea levels, which could more than triple under high emissions scenarios. Mitigating emissions can reduce the number of highly exposed sites. These findings highlight the urgent need for increased climate change adaptation for heritage sites in Africa, including governance, vulnerability assessments, monitoring, and protection strategies.

Subsidence model of the ancient Alexandria Royal port linked to sea-level rise and natural hazards using integrated geophysical methods

Amr Z. Hamouda et al.

Summary: Marine geophysical methods were employed to investigate the depositional history of an ancient Royal port, revealing the impact of sea-level rises and natural hazards over the past 2000 years. The study confirmed subsidence of the port due to sea-level rises and a tsunami in 365 AD, with detailed analyses of seafloor geomorphology showing significant variations caused by short-term winds and storms.

A rainfall threshold-based approach to early warnings in urban data-scarce regions: A case study of pluvial flooding in Alexandria, Egypt

Adele Young et al.

Summary: This study proposes a low-cost Early Warning System using rainfall thresholds to predict urban floods in Alexandria, Egypt. By analyzing historical data, observed rainfall, and ensemble precipitation forecasts, the study classified flood severity using a hazard matrix and accurately predicted severe flood events up to 24 hours in advance. This approach supports decision-making for issuing warnings and flood control actions in data-scarce regions.

Geotechnical modelling of the climate change impact on world heritage properties in Alexandria, Egypt

Sayed Hemeda

Summary: Alexandria, one of the UNESCO World Heritage sites in the Mediterranean, is at risk of coastal flooding and erosion due to rising sea levels. This research focuses on the geotechnical and structural damage mechanisms of the Catacombs of Kom El-Shoqafa and El-Shatbi Necropolis in Alexandria, which are at low elevation and vulnerable to sea level rise. The study aims to investigate the behavior of soft rock/hard soil under groundwater intrusions and contribute to the preservation of cultural heritage by accurately analyzing geotechnical problems and structural failure mechanisms. Groundwater infiltration plays a significant role in the mechanical properties of rocks and soils during various stages of numerical analysis.
