Edge-sharing BO4 tetrahedra and penta-coordinated silicon in the high-pressure modification of NaBSi3O8

Liudmila Gorelova et al.

Summary: The high-pressure behavior of NaBSi3O8 has been studied using in situ single-crystal X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy. The crystal structure of NaBSi3O8 undergoes continuous changes under pressure and forms a unique structure.

Goldhillite, Cu5Zn(AsO4)2(OH)6•H2O, a new mineral species, and redefinition of philipsburgite, Cu5Zn[(AsO4)(PO4)](OH)6•H2O, as an As-P ordered species

Rezeda M. Ismagilova et al.

Summary: Philipsburgite has been redefined as the intermediate member of the goldhillite-philipsburgite-kipushite isomorphous series. The newly discovered mineral goldhillite is the arsenate end-member of this series. Goldhillite occurs on fracture surfaces in a rock comprised mostly of quartz with iron hydroxides in association with mixite, cornwallite, and conichalcite.

Crystal structures of K-cymrite and kokchetavite from single-crystal X-ray diffraction

Alexandr Romanenko et al.

Summary: The crystal structures of high-pressure K-cymrite and its dehydrated form kokchetavite were determined, showing different space groups and unit cell structures. Upon dehydration, K-cymrite transforms into kokchetavite, challenging previous interpretations of crystal formation. Polarization dependence in the Raman spectrum of K-cymrite is important for mineral inclusion identification.

Thermal Expansion and Polymorphism of Slawsonite SrAl2Si2O8

Liudmila Gorelova et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the SrO7 polyhedron of slawsonite expands regularly with temperature, while the distribution of silicon and aluminum cations remains unchanged as temperature increases. Slawsonite exhibits high volume thermal expansion with anisotropy, and its crystal structure remains stable up to 1000 degrees C without phase transitions. The impact of Ca and Ba substitution for Sr and Al/Si ordering on natural MAl2Si2O8 polymorphism is discussed in the study.

Crystal chemistry of schreibersite, (Fe,Ni)3P

Sergey N. Britvin et al.

Summary: Schreibersite, the most abundant cosmic phosphide, serves as a principal carrier of phosphorus and a likely precursor for prebiotic organophosphorus compounds. The implementation of area detectors in X-ray diffraction has allowed for discrimination between Fe and Ni in the crystal structure of the mineral. Trends of Fe/Ni substitution in schreibersite have been shown to be consistent across different meteorite samples, with linear regression approximating the substitution over specific sites. Synthetic (Fe,Ni)(3)P cannot be considered a structural analog of natural schreibersite, highlighting the differences in equilibration time between meteoritic and synthetic samples.

Crystal Structure Evolution of Slawsonite SrAl2Si2O8 and Paracelsian BaAl2Si2O8 upon Compression and Decompression

Liudmila A. Gorelova et al.

Summary: The high-pressure behaviors of slawsonite and paracelsian were investigated, showing displacive phase transitions and forming new structures under certain pressures. Raman spectroscopy can be used to confirm these phase transitions and the high-pressure structures can be retained upon decompression. The change in size of the extra framework cation affects the phase transition pressure, but does not alter the transformation pathway.
