Use of hydrated cement pastes (HCP) as a CO2 sponge

Y. K. Kong et al.

Summary: The study investigated the feasibility of using hydrated cement paste (HCP) as a CO2 sponge by carbonating, calcining, and re-carbonating the HCP. Through microstructural analysis, the study examined the capacity of CO2 sequestration and release via HCP, as well as the carbonation phases formed within the cement paste. Initial results showed that HCP could effectively sequester CO2 and release it during the re-carbonation process, with moisture playing a significant role in the efficiency of the process.

Potential additives for magnesia-based concrete with enhanced performance and propensity for CO2 sequestration

N. T. Dung et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the development of carbonated reactive magnesia cement (RMC) concrete formulations involving hydromagnesite (H), magnesite (M) and hydration agent (HA). Replacement of RMC by H and M stimulated the formation of hydrate and carbonate phases, resulting in increased strength and improved microstructure densification. The synergistic combination of M and HA led to further strength gain by increasing carbonate content and reducing the water-to-binder ratio. This study also highlights the potential of reducing natural resource consumption, CO2 emissions, and energy consumption associated with RMC production by partial replacement of RMC with M.

An overview of utilizing CO2 for accelerated carbonation treatment in the concrete industry

Liang Li et al.

Summary: Accelerated carbonation treatment is an effective approach for reducing carbon emissions in the concrete industry, but it faces industrial challenges and research gaps. Key parameters for pre-carbonation treatment include chemical composition, particle size, temperature, pressure, and CO2 concentration. The increased CO2 uptake capacity may not necessarily improve the mechanical properties of cement-based composites. The influence of accelerated carbonation curing on the compressive strength of cement-based composites has both positive and negative effects.

Summary: The liquid-solid carbonation process proved to be more efficient than the 24-hour gas-solid pressurized carbonation method in enhancing the properties of recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) and the resulting recycled aggregate concrete (RAC). The improved performance of RAC was attributed to the formation of additional mono-carbonate (Mc) and C?S?H gel at the interface between the liquid-solid carbonated RCA and the new cement pastes.
