DNA methylation profiles in the blood of newborn term infants born to mothers with obesity

Aya Sasaki et al.

Summary: Maternal obesity is a risk factor for childhood obesity and metabolic diseases in offspring. This study examined DNA methylation patterns in infants born to mothers with normal BMI and obesity, and found differential methylation regions associated with gene regulation. The findings support the developmental origins of health and disease paradigm, suggesting that adverse prenatal exposures can influence health trajectories.

Exercise and Adipose Tissue Immunity: Outrunning Inflammation

Nathan C. Winn et al.

Summary: Chronic inflammation is considered a precipitating factor and possibly an underlying cause of many noncommunicable diseases. Obesity, affecting more than 650 million people worldwide, is the most common chronic inflammatory condition, with visceral adiposity thought to be the major inflammatory hub linking obesity and chronic disease.

Summary: Obese children with metabolic syndrome (MS) showed higher levels of serum insulin and insulin resistance compared to those without MS. The frequency of EM CD8(+) T cell subsets was significantly higher in children with MS, while there were no significant differences in CD4(+) T cell subsets between the two groups.
