Evidence That beta 1-Integrin Is Required for the Anti-Viability and Anti-Proliferative Effect of Resveratrol in CRC Cells

Aranka Brockmueller et al.

Summary: This study found that resveratrol can exert its suppressive actions on tumor microenvironment (TME)-induced tumorigenesis in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells through the beta 1-integrin receptor. Resveratrol altered the distribution pattern and expression of beta 1-integrin on the surface of CRC cells in TME, leading to decreased cell proliferation and viability, and increased apoptosis. Inhibition of beta 1-integrin or interruption of downstream signaling pathway attenuated the anti-tumor effects of resveratrol. The results highlight the important role of beta 1-integrins as signal carriers for resveratrol in CRC cells.

Resveratrol's Anti-Cancer Effects through the Modulation of Tumor Glucose Metabolism

Aranka Brockmueller et al.

Summary: Resveratrol, a well-studied polyphenol, has the potential to complement traditional tumor therapy by targeting multiple signal transduction pathways involved in cancer processes like inflammation, angiogenesis, proliferation, metastasis, glucose metabolism, and apoptosis. Tumor cells display the Warburg effect, where they reprogram their metabolism to favor aerobic glycolysis, creating a low pH environment that promotes their survival and resistance to apoptosis. Resveratrol's ability to modulate tumor glucose metabolism and target multiple components in signaling pathways makes it a promising therapeutic agent in cancer treatment.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

3D Extracellular Matrix Regulates the Activity of T Cells and Cancer Associated Fibroblasts in Breast Cancer

Huan Gao et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the significant impact of ECM on breast cancer progression and patient prognosis. Analysis of transcriptomic data and clinical information reveals distinct differences in immune activity and biological processes between ECM-high and -low groups. Clinical samples further confirm the association between collagen density/organization and breast cancer progression, while in vitro 3D-cultured fibroblasts and T cells validate the significant effects of collagen density and organization on CAF induction and T cell activation.

Cross-Talk Between Tumor Cells Undergoing Epithelial to Mesenchymal Transition and Natural Killer Cells in Tumor Microenvironment in Colorectal Cancer

Ana Vuletic et al.

Summary: The crosstalk between immune cells and tumor cells in the TME influences EMT, with NK cells playing a significant role in controlling metastasis in CRC. However, the suppressive TME can negatively impact NK cell function through modulation of receptor and ligand expression. Additionally, EMT in CRC is associated with increased expression of immune checkpoint molecules on functionally exhausted NK cells.

Hyperglycemia Promotes Liver Metastasis of Colorectal Cancer via Upregulation of Integrin αvβ6

Ben Wang et al.

Summary: This study revealed that diabetic colorectal cancer patients had worse overall and liver metastasis-free survival, with higher expression of av136 in tumor specimens. Hyperglycemia promoted invasion and migration of colon cancer cells, upregulating MMP-9 expression and activity, which was attenuated by av136 inhibition. The findings suggest that controlling glucose levels and inhibiting av136 can reduce the risk of liver metastasis in diabetic colorectal cancer patients.

Nano-Strategies Targeting the Integrin αvβ3 Network for Cancer Therapy

Tsai-Mu Cheng et al.

Summary: Integrin alpha v beta 3 plays a crucial role in cancer cell proliferation and metastasis, with its ligands and crosstalk with other signaling pathways regulating cancer growth. Inhibition of signals related to integrin alpha v beta 3 has shown promise as a target for cancer therapies. Nanotechnologies, such as the use of nanomaterial carriers, are being increasingly explored for their potential potentiation in cancer treatments targeting integrin alpha v beta 3.

Mahmood Rasool et al.

Summary: The study revealed significant increases in inflammatory and stress-related markers in patients with colon cancer, along with lower levels of antioxidants. This suggests that oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation play a crucial role in the development of colon cancer by influencing various signaling cascades and DNA modifications.
