Targeting Reactive Oxygen Species in Atherosclerosis via Chinese Herbal Medicines

Leyi Zhang et al.

Summary: Cardio-cerebrovascular disease (CCVD) has become the leading cause of human mortality, with atherosclerosis being a common pathology in CCVDs. Oxidative stress caused by excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) has become an important mechanism of atherosclerosis. Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) has potential effects in the treatment of atherosclerosis via regulating intracellular ROS, but the detailed mechanisms are still unclear.

Ginsenoside Rc attenuates myocardial ischaemic injury through antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects

Lei Shi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that ginsenoside Rc attenuates myocardial ischaemic injury in mice through its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory effects. It reduces the levels of CK-MB and troponin T, attenuates necrosis and inflammatory cell infiltration in the myocardium, decreases the contents of MDA and TNF-alpha, increases GSH level, and upregulates the expression of Nrf2, GCLC, GCLM, and HO-1. Nrf2 inhibitor partially blocks the cardioprotective effect of ginsenoside Rc. These findings suggest that ginsenoside Rc may be a potential candidate for the treatment of myocardial ischaemia.

Research methods for animal models of atherosclerosis

Yali Zhang et al.

Summary: Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease that can lead to vascular stenosis and plaque rupture, posing a threat to human health. Various animal models, with mice and rabbits being the most commonly used ones, have been employed for atherosclerosis research. However, these animal models do not entirely replicate human atherosclerotic lesions in terms of location, composition and structure, emphasizing the importance of selecting an appropriate model for research purposes and including quantitative analysis of lesion size and plaque composition.

Gut Microbiome Alterations in Patients With Carotid Atherosclerosis

Jingfeng Chen et al.

Summary: Carotid atherosclerosis (CAS) reflects systemic atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD), with studies showing associations between gut microbiome and CAS. Patients with CAS had higher risk factors and inflammatory markers compared to healthy controls. The gut microbiome composition and pathways differed significantly between CAS patients and healthy controls, with potential implications for circulating trimethylamine-N-oxide concentrations.

The Role of ABC Transporters in Lipid Metabolism and the Comorbid Course of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Atherosclerosis

Stanislav Kotlyarov et al.

Summary: COPD is rarely isolated and is often accompanied by other diseases, with systemic inflammation believed to underlie its comorbid course. Recent data suggests the importance of violations in lipid metabolism and the immune response in the pathogenesis of COPD and atherosclerosis. The involvement of ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters in these processes and their impact on the comorbid course are discussed.
