Multi-sub-inlets at cathode flow-field plate for current density homogenization and enhancement of PEM fuel cells in low relative humidity

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: This article investigates the use of multi-sub-inlet designs on the cathode flow-field plate of a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell to improve current density uniformity and overall cell performance. The results show that compared to conventional designs, the multi-sub-inlet design can improve oxygen distribution, enhance water removal capacity, and maintain a low pressure drop, leading to improved cell performance. Additionally, increasing the flow rate of the sub-inlets can further enhance the maximum power density while maintaining oxygen distribution uniformity.

Performance Investigation of Proton-Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell with Dean Flow Channels

Lin Wei et al.

Summary: This study presents a new fuel cell flow field with 3 pi/2 radian Dean flow channels and investigates its impact on the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells. The results show that the unstable vortices formed in the Dean flow channels enhance mass transfer, leading to improved performance under high current density. It is also found that the oxygen transport enhancement with the Dean channel is more significant at relatively small cathode stoichiometry. Additionally, by reducing the gas diffusion layer porosity, the membrane can be kept at high humidity, resulting in improved power output and stability of the fuel cell under low cathode inlet pressure operation.

Numerical simulation of the PEM fuel cell performance enhancement by various blockage arrangement of the cathode serpentine gas flow channel outlets/inlets

A. Hamrang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance enhancement of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells by changing the outlet/inlet configuration of parallel-serpentine flow field. The results show that geometric changes in the channel outlets/inlets can amplify the effects of transverse over-rib convection, leading to improved oxygen concentration and liquid water saturation. The findings suggest that the serpentine-baffled configuration yields the highest net power, achieving a performance increase of 38.5% compared to the parallel-serpentine case. This study provides insights for optimizing fuel cell design and performance.

Lattice Boltzmann simulation of a gas diffusion layer with a gradient polytetrafluoroethylene distribution for a proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Yulin Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the influence of polytetrafluoroethylene content and distribution on liquid transport behaviors in gas diffusion layers and the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells was investigated. The results indicate that an increased content of polytetrafluoroethylene favors liquid removal, but an extremely high content could weaken cell performance. Additionally, a reasonably higher polytetrafluoroethylene content in the inlet region of the gas diffusion layer benefits water drainage enhancement.

Numerical simulation of the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells with intermediate blocked interdigitated flow fields

Fatemeh Bagherighajari et al.

Summary: This paper aims to study the performance of fuel cells using an interdigitated flow field with intermediate channel blocks on the cathode side. The results show that the interdigitated flow fields with middle blocks can increase reactant transfer, reaction rate, and removal of liquid water in the fuel cell. Compared to the parallel flow field, the different types of interdigitated flow fields increase the net power of the fuel cell.

Analysis of the impact of flow field arrangement on the performance of PEMFC with zigzag-shaped channels

Zihao Liao et al.

Summary: The flow field configuration of a PEMFC is crucial for performance enhancement, and the study found that the contrary arrangement design provides more uniform distributions of reactants and reaction products compared to traditional designs. Additionally, the contrary arrangement design reduces mass transport resistance and boosts heat/mass transfer rates, especially under higher relative humidity and larger operating pressure conditions.
