Role of EGF Receptor Regulatory Networks in the Host Response to Viral Infections

Cathleen R. Carlin

Summary: This review article provides an overview of the structure, function, and therapeutic importance of EGFR in epithelial carcinomas. It compares different trafficking pathways triggered by ligand binding and cellular stresses, and explores the role of EGFR in viral cell entry and replication. It also discusses the emerging role of EGFR signaling in innate immunity to viral infections.

Epidemiological, clinical and virological characteristics of four cases of monkeypox support transmission through sexual contact, Italy, May 2022

Andrea Antinori et al.

Summary: Since May 2022, there has been an ongoing monkeypox outbreak in non-endemic countries. Four cases in young adult men in Italy, who engaged in condomless sexual intercourse, were reported. The patients are in good clinical condition and do not require specific antiviral drugs. Monkeypox viral DNA was detected in seminal fluid samples. The possibility of sexual transmission of monkeypox virus needs to be investigated.

Ongoing monkeypox virus outbreak, Portugal, 29 April to 23 May 2022

Mariana Perez Duque et al.

Summary: Portugal has detected 96 confirmed cases of monkeypox as of 27 May 2022. Among the 27 confirmed cases, all were males with a median age of 33 years (range: 22-51). The earliest symptom onset date was 29 April. The majority of cases (25 out of 27) were found in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley health region. Most cases were not associated with identified transmission chains, travel history, symptomatic individuals, or contact with animals, suggesting the possibility of previously undetected spread of monkeypox.

STAT1 and Its Crucial Role in the Control of Viral Infections

Manlio Tolomeo et al.

Summary: STAT1 protein plays a crucial role in the immune response against viruses, and its deficiency can result in severe infections and even death. It has been found that some viruses inhibit the activity of STAT1, making it important to search for drugs that can target these viral proteins for the treatment of dangerous viral infections and future viral pandemics, as demonstrated by the clinical results with Paxlovid in SARS-CoV-2-infected patients.

Monkeypox: A New Threat?

Dorota Kmiec et al.

Summary: The global smallpox vaccination programme successfully eliminated the virus, but the halted vaccination and increasing susceptibility have led to the spread of monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus, a close relative of smallpox virus, can be cross-protected by smallpox vaccines. However, over 70% of people have never been vaccinated against smallpox. Monkeypox symptoms include fever, headache, muscle ache, and characteristic rash, with lower fatality rates compared to smallpox. Monkeypox virus is endemic in sub-Saharan Africa and spreads through exotic animal trade and international travel.

Summary: Two cases of monkeypox virus infection in individuals returning from Nigeria to the USA have led to a dramatic increase in infection rates. As of June 10, 2022, over 1,500 cases have been reported in 43 countries, including Europe and North America. While monkeypox virus is prevalent in central and western Africa, its presence in developed countries has raised concerns about global spread.

Summary: The description of the 2022 monkeypox outbreak is mainly based on historical cases observed locally in Africa, along with rare imported cases in four other countries prior to the outbreak. This outbreak of orthopoxvirus seems to have a particularly high sexual transmission rate, possibly due to the prevalence of genital lesions.

Summary: Several neglected infectious pathogens, including monkeypox virus (MPXV), have resurfaced in recent decades, posing a global health burden. Despite the availability of an early-stage vaccine against MPXV infection, there has been a continued rise in travel-related outbreaks worldwide. As of May 31, 2022, there have been 472 confirmed cases reported in 27 countries, marking the highest number of cases recorded outside Africa since the disease was first discovered in the early 1970s.
