Effect of different activation agents for activated carbon preparation through characterization and life cycle assessment

M. Amin et al.

Summary: This study assessed the production of activated carbon from Quercus Alba and evaluated its environmental impacts using the life cycle assessment (LCA) approach. The properties of activated carbon produced with different chemical activation agents were examined. The use of power in laboratory steps was found to have the most damaging environmental impact, while the activated carbon produced using KOH had the largest ecological footprint. Marine aquatic ecotoxicity and terrestrial acidification were identified as the most relevant environmental effect categories. The choice of chemical activation agent played a significant role in the environmental implications of activated carbon production. From an economic and environmental perspective, Quercus Alba could be a viable material for activated carbon production when a suitable activation agent is used.

Hydrogen production through renewable and non-renewable energy processes and their impact on climate change

Muhammad Amin et al.

Summary: Urbanization and population growth have significantly impacted global energy demands. The use of non-renewable fossil fuel-based energy infrastructure leads to air pollution, global warming, greenhouse gas emissions, acid rain, diminishing energy resources, and environmental degradation. This necessitates the exploration of alternative energy sources. Hydrogen, as an efficient energy carrier, has gained scientific attention as an alternative fuel to meet energy demands. This review focuses on hydrogen production from renewable sources (such as biomass, solar, wind, geothermal, and algae) and conventional non-renewable sources (including natural gas, coal, nuclear, and thermochemical processes). Additionally, the cost analysis for hydrogen production from each energy source is discussed. Finally, the environmental impact and implications of these hydrogen production processes are summarized.

Revealing the activity of different iron carbides for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis

Fangxu Lu et al.

Summary: Research on iron-based catalysts doped with SiO2 or Al2O3 has shown that adjusting the formation of iron carbides can enhance the activity of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions. Characterization results using techniques such as XPS and CO-DRIFTS revealed that SiO2 or Al2O3 affects the electronic state of iron atoms and promotes the formation of Fe-Si or Fe-Al interactions on the surface of iron powder, which in turn plays a key role in the formation of the active phase ε-Fe2C. The content of ε-Fe2C is found to be more beneficial to activity compared to the traditionally recognized active phase χ-Fe5C2 in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis reactions.
