Suction feeding biomechanics of Polypterus bichir: investigating linkage mechanisms and the contributions of cranial kinesis to oral cavity volume change

Summary: Many fishes, including Polypterus bichir, use cranial kinesis to increase buccal cavity volume and capture prey through suction feeding. In this study, the kinematics of buccal expansion in P. bichir during suction feeding were analyzed using XROMM. It was found that the movements of the cranial bones, particularly the ceratohyal, were the most significant drivers of oral cavity volume change. The axial muscles, cleithrum, and ceratohyal were also found to play a central role in ventral expansion.

The lateral expansion of the suspensorium allowed for fluid guidance through spiracular and opercular cavities, maintaining primitive features during the fish-tetrapod transition. The gar-like stage in early tetrapod evolution might have played a crucial role in evolving terrestrial feeding systems by combining both biting and suction mechanisms.
