Small Molecule Approach to Passivate Undercoordinated Ions in Perovskite Light Emitting Diodes: Progress and Challenges

Ji Yeong Lee et al.

Summary: Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) show promise for next-generation display and light technologies, but face challenges related to factors such as external quantum efficiency and long-term stability. Research on PeLEDs focusing on the small-molecule approach has grown in recent years, aiming to enhance device performance and stability through molecular insertion and interface engineering.

Two-dimensional superconductivity and anisotropic transport at KTaO3 (111) interfaces

Changjiang Liu et al.

Summary: The study discovers superconductivity in electron gases formed at interfaces between certain materials, with a relatively high superconducting transition temperature and clear two-dimensional superconductivity. In some samples, a spontaneous in-plane transport anisotropy is observed before the onset of superconductivity, indicating the emergence of a distinct stripe-like phase.

One-dimensional Kronig-Penney superlattices at the LaAlO3/SrTiO3 interface

Megan Briggeman et al.

Summary: Semiconductor heterostructures and ultracold neutral atomic lattices mimic essential properties of one-dimensional electronic systems. Conductive atomic force microscope lithography on oxide interfaces can create ballistic few-mode electron waveguides. Imposed artificial Kronig-Penney-like superlattice potentials on these waveguides can fracture electronic subbands into new subbands with magnetically tunable fractional conductance.

Electric field control of superconductivity at the LaAlO3/KTaO3(111) interface

Zheng Chen et al.

Summary: The study shows that the superconducting state at the oxide interface between LaAlO3 and KTaO3(111) can be tuned by applying a gate voltage across KTaO3, resulting in a dome-shaped dependence of transition temperature on gate voltage. The electric gating affects mobility more than carrier density. As the temperature decreases, the resistance saturates at the lowest temperature on both superconducting and insulating sides, indicating the emergence of a quantum metallic state associated with a failed superconductor and/or fragile insulator.

Cooperative evolution of polar distortion and nonpolar rotation of oxygen octahedra in oxide heterostructures

Taewon Min et al.

Summary: Polarity discontinuity in LaAlO3/SrTiO3 (LAO/STO) heterostructures induces the formation of two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and structural distortions involving antiferrodistortive (AFD) rotation and ferroelectric (FE) distortion. AFD and FE modes are cooperatively coupled below the critical thickness in LAO/STO (111) heterostructures, disappearing simultaneously above the critical thickness with the formation of 2DEG. Oxygen vacancy (VO) formation at the LAO (111) surface acts as the source of 2DEG, with the evolution of AFD rotation and FE distortion strongly correlated with VO distribution. This study demonstrates the emergence of AFD and FE modes in oxide heterostructures as a result of the interplay between misfit strain and polar field, with their coupling being tunable by changing the interface orientation.

Two-dimensional carrier gas at complex oxide interfaces: Control of functionality

Wente Li et al.

Summary: New functionalities and unexpected electronic structures can emerge in artificially engineered complex oxide heterointerfaces through the coupling of multiple physical properties. By combining theoretical analysis, experimental growth, and atomic level resolution techniques, intriguing emergent interfacial phenomena can be highlighted. Various methods such as band offset engineering, polarization doping, and oxygen vacancy doping are discussed for creating a two-dimensional carrier gas and manipulating electron/hole gases for potential applications in new electronic devices.

Optical conductivity and superconductivity in highly overdoped La2-xCaxCuO4 thin films

Gideok Kim et al.

Summary: By using atomic layer-by-layer oxide molecular beam epitaxy, epitaxial thin films of La2-xCaxCuO4 with x up to 0.5 were successfully grown, exhibiting superconductivity with Tc of 15 to 20 K. The nearly identical radii of La and Ca ions in the material were found to minimize the impact of structural disorder, leading to an extended superconducting dome in the phase diagram of cuprates.

Magnetic excitations in infinite-layer nickelates

H. Lu et al.

Summary: The discovery of superconductivity in infinite-layer nickelates brings us closer to a material class similar to cuprate superconductors. Measurements of magnetic excitations in these nickelates showed that undoped NdNiO2 possesses a branch of dispersive excitations with a bandwidth of approximately 200 milli-electron volts.

Universal Structural Influence on the 2D Electron Gas at SrTiO3 Surfaces

Eduardo B. Guedes et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of the electronic structure of a 2-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) on SrTiO3 surfaces, showing a metal-insulator transition around 135 K caused by local structure relaxations. The research presents a new method of tuning the 2DEG via surface vicinality and explores how prospective devices will respond to temperature changes through experimental and theoretical comparisons.
