Land use change dynamics in Euro-mediterranean mountain regions: Driving forces and consequences for the landscape

Yolanda Jimenez-Olivencia et al.

Summary: The marginalization of mountain regions in Mediterranean Europe since the mid-20th Century has caused significant socioeconomic and environmental changes, endangering the survival of regulated landscapes. This research focuses on the mountains as heritage reserves and environmental service sources, analyzing evidence of land use change dynamics, their drivers, and impacts on the landscape. The main causes of landscape change are primarily the abandonment of farmland and reforestation, along with influences from urban development in coastal and peri-urban mountain ranges.
