Influence of publication on university ranking: Citation, collaboration, and level of interdisciplinary research

Hongjun Li et al.

Summary: The ranking of universities is often influenced by factors such as publication productivity, research impact, and the level of interdisciplinary research. Larger, comprehensive universities with extensive international collaborations tend to rank higher, while smaller, specialized universities can achieve high rankings through exceptional academic performance.

Education for Sustainable Development in Higher Education Rankings: Challenges and Opportunities for Developing Internationally Comparable Indicators

Anete Veidemane

Summary: This paper examines the shortcomings of existing sustainability rankings in terms of indicators for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and explores the opportunities and challenges in developing internationally comparable ESD indicators. The results indicate that ESD indicators are considered highly relevant and the majority of higher education institutions surveyed plan to collect ESD data in the near future. However, the current ESD indicators lack sufficient criteria for identification and comparison across countries.

Enhancing sustainable development goals or promoting universities? An analysis of the times higher education impact rankings

Nuria Bautista-Puig et al.

Summary: The study found severe inconsistencies in the methodology of THE-IR, offering a distorted view of sustainability in higher education institutions and allowing different strategic actions to participate in the ranking. The growing number of universities from developing countries and the absence of world-class universities suggest an opportunity for less-esteemed institutions, but from a flawed ranking that should be avoided for decision-making.

The lack of meaningful boundary differences between journal impact factor quartiles undermines their independent use in research evaluation

Gabriel-Alexandru Viiu et al.

Summary: The use of Journal Impact Factor (JIF) quartiles for research evaluation may not be meaningful due to the small differences between quartile boundary JIF values, leading to a lack of significant impact differentiation among journals in different quartiles. While social sciences are more affected, there is also significant variation within categories that may affect assessment. This phenomenon of impact factor inflation suggests a need to reconsider using quartiles as an independent method for research assessment.

The academic wanderer: structure of collaboration network and relation with research performance

Pavlos Paraskevopoulos et al.

Summary: This study used cognitive models from anthropology to investigate the personal collaboration networks of scientists, finding a correlation between high publication and impact with larger collaboration networks. However, there is a capacity limit effect where higher performance becomes less correlated with larger networks. International academic migrants are better at expanding their networks, while domestic migrants excel at using collaboration for higher impact. High academic mobility does not necessarily lead to better performance or larger collaboration networks.
