Tools for a multiproduct biorefinery of Acacia dealbata biomass

L. Lopez-Hortas et al.

Summary: The forest wastes removed to control invasive shrub Acacia dealbata Link can be used as a low-cost renewable source of biomass for producing biofuels, bioactives, and chemicals. Various studies have explored traditional and innovative processes for utilizing different parts of the plant. This review highlights the environmental issues associated with the shrub in invaded areas and discusses technologies for extracting commercially valuable compounds from silver wattle in a zero waste biorefinery approach.

Earthworm biomass and population structure are negatively associated with changes in organic residue nitrogen concentration during vermicomposting

Bo Zhou et al.

Summary: Vermicomposting is an efficient and environmentally friendly technology for disposing of agricultural organic residues. The study investigated the responses of earthworm biomass and population structure to changes in the physicochemical properties of six types of organic residues during vermicomposting. It was found that earthworm activity varied among different types of organic residues, with the substrate C/N ratio negatively affecting earthworm growth dynamics. Regular monitoring of the chemical properties of vermicomposting systems is recommended to sustain active earthworm populations.
