Heterogeneity, Household Co-Production, and Risks of Water Services - Water Demand of Private Households with Multiple Water Sources

Heinrich Zozmann et al.

Summary: Research shows that households consider factors such as the diversity of water services, household co-production, and supply risks when choosing and using water resources. Different characteristics of water services result in varying time requirements and suitability for household activities, and households choose different water services based on their evaluation of the value of time. Certain water services can also act as insurance against supply uncertainties.

Conflicts, cooperation and experimentation: Analysing the politics of urban water through Accra's heterogeneous water supply infrastructure

Rossella Alba et al.

Summary: This paper analyses the heterogeneous water supply infrastructure in Accra, Ghana, and explores the politics of water distribution in cities. By studying the cooperation or conflict between different actors and infrastructure, the study finds that the distribution of water in the city is shaped by multiple actors with diverse motives, including profit-making, political legitimacy, and religious beliefs. The study also reveals that the distribution, risks, and responsibilities of water are constantly contested among these actors, leading to unforeseen outcomes and possibilities for progressive experimentation. Therefore, the analysis calls for further focus on practices and policies of solidarity in heterogeneous provisioning systems.

A coupled human-natural system analysis of freshwater security under climate and population change

Jim Yoon et al.

Summary: Limited water availability, population growth, and climate change have led to freshwater crises in many countries, with Jordan facing a particularly severe situation exacerbated by conflict-induced population shocks. A comprehensive Jordan Water Model has been developed to assess the nation's freshwater security under climate and socioeconomic changes, revealing significant declines in water security without intervention. Implementing large-scale desalinization and comprehensive water sector reform could lead to exponential improvements in water security for Jordan's future.
