Particulate emissions of real-world light-duty gasoline vehicle fleet in Iran

Maryam Zare Shahne et al.

Summary: This study focused on the fine particulate matter emitted from road traffic in Tehran, Iran. By collecting samples from various tunnel stations, the researchers were able to determine the source profile and emission factor of PM2.5 for light-duty vehicles in Tehran. Results showed similarity in vehicle fleets source profile with other countries and extracted an emission factor for PM2.5, which can be used for emission inventories improvement and management strategies in Tehran and other countries with similar traffic situations.

Influence of the competitive effect of V-shaped slope tunnel on smoke characteristics

Xuepeng Jiang et al.

Summary: Numerical simulations were conducted to study the smoke spread characteristics in V-shaped slope tunnels, showing that smoke movement is influenced by competition and the location of the fire source. The slope and location of the fire source affect the smoke spread, but the heat release rate has minimal impact. The smoke movement can be classified into different zones based on back-layering length and mass flow rate distribution.

Proposing a general formula to calculate the critical velocities in tunnels with different cross-sectional shapes

Hamidreza Savalanpour et al.

Summary: The shape of the tunnel cross-section significantly affects the critical velocity in tunnel fires. A new calculation method using 3D computational fluid dynamics to determine critical velocities for different cross-sectional shapes of tunnels has been proposed, along with a tuning factor to correlate the results of various shapes. Recommendations for tunnel fires are provided based on the proposed formula.

Comprehensive characterization of tire and road wear particles in highway tunnel road dust by use of size and density fractionation

Philipp Klockner et al.

Summary: Through fractionation and analysis of tunnel road dust, it was found that TRWP content was high and mainly concentrated in the 20-50 mm size fraction, while organic tire constituents were mainly concentrated in the smallest size fraction. Biological analysis showed that solvent extracts from size and density fractions had effects on the arylhydrocarbon receptor and the adaptive response to oxidative stress.

Environmental and health risks of VOCs in the longest inner-city tunnel in Xi'an, Northwest China: Implication of impact from new energy vehicles

Hongmei Xu et al.

Summary: The study collected traffic-source dominated VOC samples in a tunnel in Xi'an, China, during four time intervals in summer 2019. High levels of VOCs were found during rush hours compared to non-rush hours, mainly attributed to vehicle emissions. BTEX and certain VOCs played a significant role in TVOC levels, while motor vehicle emissions were a major contributor to ozone formation potential.
