Livelihood Capitals, Income Inequality, and the Perception of Climate Change: A Case Study of Small-Scale Cattle Farmers in the Ecuadorian Andes

Bolier Torres et al.

Summary: This study conducted surveys in communities located in the Ecuadorian Andes, and identified poverty, growth, and inequality as key factors affecting sustainable development. The characteristics of rural livelihoods, perception of climate change, and willingness to accept mitigation and adaptation measures were evaluated. The results indicated significant inequality and limited awareness of climate change among producers, but a willingness to participate in strengthening programs.

A land-based approach for climate change mitigation in the livestock sector

Maria Vincenza Chiriaco et al.

Summary: This study examines the potential of sustainable land management in reducing GHG emissions from agriculture, forestry and other land uses. By implementing a land-based approach at a small-scale rural landscape level, it is possible to achieve carbon neutral livestock systems by offsetting emissions and implementing sustainable land-use options. The results from a case study in Italy demonstrate the significant contribution of the land sector to climate change mitigation when sustainable practices are applied.

Water footprint of a tropical beef cattle production system: The impact of individual-animal and feed management

Julio Cesar Pascale Palhares et al.

Summary: This study calculated the water footprint of a tropical cattle production system and evaluated the influence of individual-animal performance and type of diet. The results showed that the type of diet significantly affected water footprint values, while the weight of animals had a less clear impact on water footprint values.

Land Use and Land Cover Changes in the Diversity and Life Zone for Uncontacted Indigenous People: Deforestation Hotspots in the Yasuni Biosphere Reserve, Ecuadorian Amazon

Marco Heredia-R et al.

Summary: Land use and land cover change is crucial for monitoring environmental change in areas of high biodiversity like the Amazon biome. This study in northern Ecuador aimed to investigate territorial dynamics of land use changes and found that most land in the study area was transformed into pastures. Improved territorial planning is essential to avoid conflicts between different populations living in the area.

Identification and Assessment of Livestock Best Management Practices (BMPs) Using the REDD+ Approach in the Ecuadorian Amazon

Bolier Torres et al.

Summary: Deforestation poses a serious threat to diversity in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region, and the study found that adopting best management practices in livestock can promote sustainable production and reduce emissions from deforestation. The majority of the Kichwa population resides in the medium zone, while the upper and lower areas focus on milk production and dual-purpose cattle respectively.

Multitemporal Analysis as a Non-Invasive Technology Indicates a Rapid Change in Land Use in the Amazon: The Case of the ITT Oil Block

Marco Heredia-R et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the multi-temporality of land-use change in the ITT Oil Block of the Amazon Region of Ecuador. It found that forest cover decreased while infrastructure and cultivation increased over the period of 2001-2017. The most significant land-use changes in the ITT Oil Block were the categories of bare soil and cultivation.
