Joint Optimization of Zone Area and Headway for Demand Responsive Transit Service under Heterogeneous Environment

Lin Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a mathematical model to optimize zonal demand responsive transit (DRT) considering heterogeneous environment and the advent of Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS). The model takes into account various factors such as community boundary, land use, demand distribution, line-haul travel time, etc. Passengers with different expectations of vehicle arrival time are considered, and the average cost is minimized through optimizing service zone areas and associated headways. The model is applied to a real-world region in Calgary, Canada, and the impact of real-time vehicle arrival information is assessed. The sensitivity analysis explores the relationship between system parameters and the optimized solutions.

Potential Benefits of Demand Responsive Transport in Rural Areas: A Simulation Study in Lolland, Denmark

Sergei Dytckov et al.

Summary: This study explores the potential effects of introducing demand responsive transport (DRT) in low demand areas using simulation. The results show that DRT can be more cost efficient and produce less CO2 emissions compared to regular buses when demand is low. The study also analyzes the demand density at which regular buses become more cost efficient and examines how the target service quality of DRT can affect operational characteristics.

Improved K-means algorithm for clustering non-spherical data

Honglei He et al.

Summary: In this study, an improved K-means algorithm (IK-means) is proposed to enhance clustering efficiency for non-spherical data. By clustering the original dataset into high-density sub-clusters and merging them, IK-means algorithm shows good clustering capability for data of arbitrary shape and is faster for larger datasets compared to DBSCAN and KGFCM.

Optimization Method for Conventional Bus Stop Placement and the Bus Line Network Based on the Voronoi Diagram

Fu Wang et al.

Summary: With the rapid economic development and the rise of urban rail transit, the traditional bus transit system needs to be integrated with the rail transit system to optimize the entire public transport system. By using the concept of the Voronoi diagram, this study divides the service area of bus stops and proposes an optimization model for layout and line network. The optimized schemes for a public transport system in Wuhan East Lake High-tech Development Zone showed significant improvements compared to the current situation, proving the practicality and scientific nature of the study's optimization method.

The dilemma of demand-responsive transport services in rural areas: Conflicting expectations and weak user acceptance

Stephanie E. Schasche et al.

Summary: This systematic literature review analyzes the research field of demand-responsive transport (DRT) services and identifies the difficulties in the success of these services. The study provides an overview of user-oriented research, detects a threefold conflicting performance expectancy, and discovers a discrepancy between the perception of DRT services and the empirical design of studies. The research points out research gaps regarding performance expectation, user focus, and rurality, and proposes implications for policymakers and practitioners.

An Analysis of the Integration of DRT Services with Local Public Transport in Post-pandemic Period: Some of the Preliminary Insights in the Italian Context

Tiziana Campisi et al.

Summary: Italy was one of the first countries in Europe to be severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. The restrictions on public transport during the pandemic highlighted the need to rethink complementary transport systems. Italy has implemented measures to encourage sustainable transport modes and utilize demand responsive transport systems to improve mobility in areas with weak demand for public transport.

Service Quality Assessment of App-Based Demand-Responsive Public Transit Services in Lahore, Pakistan

Muhammad Abdullah et al.

Summary: App-based demand-responsive transit services are growing in areas where traditional public transport falls short. SWVL and Airlift are two such services in Lahore, Pakistan. This study evaluated passenger satisfaction with these services, finding that service-attributes and bus ambiance significantly predicted overall satisfaction in choice A, while predictors were insignificant for choice B. Such insights can help improve overall satisfaction levels for these services.

On the optimization of the bus network design: An analytical approach based on the three-dimensional macroscopic fundamental diagram

Igor Dakic et al.

Summary: Various factors influence the level of service in public transport, especially related to the network structure and operating regime. Existing studies often make strong assumptions and do not consider the impact of different user behaviors and trip length patterns on costs. This paper aims to address these gaps by examining the effects of multiple trip length patterns and user behavior types on bus network design.
