Benthic microbial fuel cell systems for marine applications

Clare E. Reimers et al.

Summary: This communication describes the design of a compact benthic microbial fuel cell (BMFC) and a power management platform (PMP) that have been used to recharge lithium-ion batteries with energy harvested in situ from biomass enclosed in the BMFC's anode chamber. The experiments conducted demonstrate that the BMFC systems are mature enough to be applied within marine observing networks, providing an alternative power source that can easily be integrated with various innovative sensors.

A quantitative extracellular electron transfer (EET) kinetics study of Geobacter sulfurreducens enriched microbial community reveals the transition of EET limiting step during biofilm growth

Hao Ren et al.

Summary: This study investigated the EET kinetics of Geobacter sulfurreducens enriched microbial community for a series of biofilm growth stages, revealing the mechanism of EET through quantitative reaction kinetics parameter analysis. Current densities were reported to be less than 2.2 Am-2 and between 2.2 and 3.1 Am-2 in early to mid-stage biofilms.

Feasibility study on a mini autonomous biosensor based on microbial fuel cell for monitoring hexavalent chromium in wastewater

Chin-Tsan Wang et al.

Summary: Microbial fuel cells (MFCs) are power generation devices for sustainable energy, and a mini autonomous biosensor (MAB) based on MFCs has been designed for detecting hexavalent chromium in wastewater. Results show that MAB has the potential for simultaneous electricity production and hexavalent chromium detection, with conductive silver glue as anode electrode feasible for detection.

Practical demonstration of applicability and efficiency of platinum group metal-free based catalysts in microbial fuel cells for wastewater treatment

Sofia Babanova et al.

Summary: In this study, PGM-free catalysts were incorporated into the MFC system for treating swine wastewater, resulting in significantly improved cathode activity and overall power output. The addition of Fe-AAPyr derived catalyst demonstrated stability, durability, and reliability in real environmental conditions. The fluctuation in power output throughout the experiment was attributed to varying environmental conditions in natural settings.

Colorimetric and Electrochemical Dual-Signal Method for Water Toxicity Detection Based on Escherichia coli and p-Benzoquinone

Dengbin Yu et al.

Summary: This study proposed a dual-signal toxicity detection method for rapid detection of water toxicity, which can also be visually estimated by the naked eye, making it more reliable compared to traditional methods. By using Escherichia coli and p-benzoquinone for color reaction, toxicity of Cu2+ was successfully detected, showing certain application prospects.

Recovery and separation of uranium in a microbial fuel cell using a titanium dioxide nanotube array cathode

Wenbin Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a microbial fuel cell system with a titanium dioxide nanotube array cathode was developed to efficiently remove and recover uranium from groundwater. The removal of U(vi) was achieved through an adsorption-reduction-deposition mechanism, demonstrating that the adsorbed U(vi) could be further electroreduced to U(iv)O-2 and deposited on the cathode surface, allowing for continuous uranium removal.
