Improving the phase transition characteristic and latent heat storage efficiency by forming polymer-based shape-stabilized PCM for active latent storage system

Dwi Rahmalina et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the application of form-stabilized phase change material (SSPCM) in active latent heat storage (ALHS) systems. It is found that using high-density polyethylene (HDPE) and styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) as supporting materials improves thermal conductivity and supercooling degree of SSPCM. Evaluation using a tube-in-shell heat exchanger shows that composite SSPCM has a lower temperature gradient and higher storage efficiency.

Performance enhancement of a thermal energy storage system using shape-stabilized LDPE/hexadecane/SEBS composite PCMs by copper oxide addition

Abdelwaheb Trigui et al.

Summary: Thermal Energy Storage (TES) technologies based on Phase Change Materials (PCMs) have promoted the development of clean and renewable energy. However, the application of organic PCMs is limited due to their low thermal conductivities and liquid leakage during phase transition. In this study, copper oxide (CuO) microparticles were added to enhance thermal performance and shape-stabilized composite PCMs (SSPCMs) were prepared. The results showed that the addition of CuO increased the degradation temperature and weight loss temperature of the composites. There was no leakage or impairment of the composite PCM during the heating and cooling processes. The presence of CuO microparticles reduced the supercooling effect and increased the energy storage/release capacity of the SSPCM composites.

Comparative investigation on heat transfer enhancement of surface-roughened and nano-dispersed phase change material for thermal energy storage

Ravichandran Santosh et al.

Summary: This study compares the thermal behavior of different encapsulated paraffin PCMs and finds that surface-roughened encapsulation contributes to the highest heat transfer rate. The duration for complete melting and solidification of PCM in the shot-peened capsule is significantly shorter compared to other cases, while the effect of air heat transfer fluid (HTF) flow rate on heat transfer is minimal.

Phase change material-sand mixtures for distributed latent heat thermal energy storage: Interaction and performance analysis

Silvia Barbi et al.

Summary: This study evaluated two phase change materials mixed with sand for distributed latent heat thermal energy storage coupled with a novel ground heat exchanger, finding that sand addition reduced phase change time and supercooling, while mixing phase change materials in sand increased heat transfer efficiency, with these performances remaining stable through multiple thermal cycles.

Experimental investigation on heat transfer characteristics of phase change composite for thermal energy storage system

P. Jidhesh et al.

Summary: A novel technology utilizing composite phase change materials to produce a low-cost thermal energy storage system was introduced in this paper. The addition of steatite powder in paraffin can enhance the thermal performance of the PCM and improve its solidification rate. Experimental analysis showed that adding different weight fractions of steatite powder in paraffin can significantly increase the solidification rate.
