Toward Suppressing Oil Backflow Based on a Combined Driving Waveform for Electrowetting Displays

Zhengxing Long et al.

Summary: Electrowetting display (EWD) is a promising electronic paper technology with low power consumption, fast response, and full color. In this study, a new driving waveform was proposed to improve the stability of the aperture ratio in EWDs by suppressing oil backflow and maintaining a stable display. Experimental results showed significant improvements in luminance value, grayscale stability, aperture ratio, and response time.

Inhibiting Oil Splitting and Backflow in Electrowetting Displays by Designing a Power Function Driving Waveform

Lixia Tian et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a power function driving waveform for electrowetting displays (EWDs) to address their defects such as reduced aperture ratio and unstable grayscale. By optimizing the oil splitting suppression stage, DC driving stage, and oil stabilization stage, the proposed waveform effectively improves the aperture ratio and oil stability of EWDs, shortens the response time, and increases the luminance value.

Design of inclined omni-directional reflector for sidewall-emission-free micro-scale light-emitting diodes

Xinpei Hu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an omni-directional reflector (ODR) for mu LED displays to improve light extraction efficiency and reduce sidewall emission. The sidewall emission of inclined mu LED is analyzed using the two-dimensional finite-difference time-domain method, and the effectiveness of ODR is verified through experiments.

Design of Driving Waveform Based on Overdriving Voltage for Shortening Response Time in Electrowetting Displays

Wenjun Zeng et al.

Summary: A driving waveform based on overdriving voltages and charge trapping theory was proposed to shorten the response time of electrowetting displays (EWDs). Experimental results demonstrated that the response time of EWDs can be reduced by 29.27% compared to a traditional PWM driving waveform.

A Separated Reset Waveform Design for Suppressing Oil Backflow in Active Matrix Electrowetting Displays

Linwei Liu et al.

Summary: The charge embedding in the dielectric layer is identified as the cause of oil backflow in electrowetting displays (EWDs), and a separated reset waveform is proposed to suppress oil backflow. This waveform is composed of a charge-releasing stage and an oil-moving back stage, effectively extending the oil backflow time and maintaining grayscale levels.

Driving Scheme Optimization for Electrowetting Displays Based on Contact Angle Hysteresis to Achieve Precise Gray-Scales

Li Wang et al.

Summary: Electrowetting display (EWD) is a new display technology with paper-like display characteristics, low power consumption, quick response, and full color, making it ideal for portable devices. This study proposed a driving scheme for EWDs using AC voltage to reduce gray-scale distortion caused by contact angle hysteresis. Experimental results showed that a 470 Hz AC driving scheme significantly improved the display performance of pixel units by reducing aperture ratio distortion from 35.82 to 5.97%.
