Determination of the Activation Energy for Hydride Decomposition Using a Sieverts-Type Apparatus and the Kissinger Equation

Myoung-Youp Song et al.

Summary: We developed a method to determine the activation energy for hydride decomposition using a Sieverts-type apparatus and the Kissinger equation. The dehydriding rates were calculated based on measurements of hydrogen released and reactor temperature, and the Kissinger equation was applied to determine the activation energy.

Effect of Ti-based nanosized additives on the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2

V. V. Berezovets et al.

Summary: MgH2-based nanocomposites were synthesized using reactive ball milling and various catalytic additives. The additives improved the hydrogen absorption-desorption kinetics and stability of the composites. Nano-Ti showed the most stable hydrogen absorption-desorption characteristics compared to TiO2 and Ti4Fe2Ox additives.

Elucidating Evidence for the In Situ Reduction of Graphene Oxide by Magnesium Hydride and the Consequence of Reduction on Hydrogen Storage

D. Pukazhselvan et al.

Summary: The current study investigated the interaction between graphene oxide (GO) additive and magnesium hydride (MgH2), leading to the transformation to reduced graphene oxide (rGO). The results showed that the in situ transformation of GO to rGO reduced the dehydrogenation temperature of MgH2, increased the hydrogen ab/desorption reaction kinetics, and decreased the dehydrogenation activation energy. The study also demonstrated the potential of using magnesium hydride to trigger the GO to rGO transformation for the preparation of rGO and rGO composite materials, which are important for energy storage applications.

Hydrogen charging kinetics of Mg-10wt% Fe2O3 prepared via MgH2-forming mechanical milling

Myoung Youp Song et al.

Summary: The hydrogen charging of Mg-10Fe(2)O(3) involves dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen molecules on particle surfaces, diffusion of hydrogen atoms through a thickening Mg hydride layer, and chemical reaction of Mg with hydrogen at the interface. The rate-determining step is the dissociative chemisorption of hydrogen molecules on the surfaces of Mg and/or Fe in the initial hydrogen charging stage, while diffusion of hydrogen atoms through the thickening Mg hydride layer determines the hydrogen charging rate in the later stage.

Improvement in Hydriding and Dehydriding Features of Mg-TaF5-VCl3 Alloy by Adding Ni and x wt% MgH2 (x=1, 5, and 10) Together with TaF5 and VCl3

Young-Jun Kwak et al.

Summary: In this study, Ni was added to Mg along with TaF5 and VCl3 to enhance the reaction rates with hydrogen and the hydrogen-storage capacity. The addition of MgH2 further improved the hydriding and dehydriding properties by reducing particle size, lowering the release temperature of hydrogen, and increasing rates of hydrogen absorption and desorption. Among the samples, the one with x = 5 showed the best cycling performance and the highest hydrogen-storage capacity.
