Thermochromic Cholesteric Liquid Crystal Microcapsules with Cellulose Nanocrystals and a Melamine Resin Hybrid Shell

Tingjiao Yang et al.

Summary: This study successfully fabricated CLC microcapsules containing CNCs and an MF hybrid shell via in situ polymerization using CNC-stabilized Pickering emulsions as templates, which can be used for the preparation of thermochromic coatings. The resulting thermochromic coatings can adjust their color in the visible wavelength range and exhibit a high reflectance, making them applicable to flexible substrates.

Thermochromic Microcapsules Containing Chiral Mesogens Enclosed by Hydrogel Shell for Colorimetric Temperature Reporters

Ji-Won Kim et al.

Summary: Chiral mesogens spontaneously form a cholesteric phase and show structural colors through wavelength-selective reflection. In this study, cholesteryl esters are encapsulated with a calcium-alginate hydrogel shell using oil-in-water-in-oil double-emulsion droplets to form thermochromic microcapsules. These microcapsules can report local temperatures with colors or reflectance spectra, and the range and sensitivity of the colorimetric temperature measurement can be controlled by adjusting the composition of cholesteryl esters.

Encoding Hidden Information onto Surfaces Using Polymerized Cholesteric Spherical Reflectors

Yong Geng et al.

Summary: The omnidirectional Bragg reflection of cholesteric liquid crystals molded into spheres turns them into narrow-band retroreflectors with distinct circular polarization. These cholesteric spherical reflectors (CSRs) can encode information onto surfaces for far-field optical read-out without false positives, and the retroreflection band is tuned to the near-UV or IR spectra to hide the encoding from detection by the human eye, allowing widespread deployment in human-populated environments; They can be permanently embedded in a binder to minimize undesired scattering and reflections.
