Inconsistency of islands in theories with long-range gravity

Hao Geng et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the potential problems of islands in standard theories of massless gravity. Islands are entanglement wedges disconnected from the asymptotic region, and in some known examples, the tension with the gravitational law is resolved by the presence of massive gravitons. Additionally, the authors derive some consistency conditions that islands in decoupled systems must satisfy.

Replica wormholes and the black hole interior

Geoff Penington et al.

Summary: Recent work has shown how to obtain the Page curve of an evaporating black hole through holographic computations of entanglement entropy. The validity of these computations is justified using the replica trick and geometries with a spacetime wormhole connecting the different replicas. The Page transition is studied in detail in a simple model by summing replica geometries with different topologies. Related quantities are computed in less detail in more complicated models like JT gravity coupled to conformal matter and the SYK model. Additionally, a direct gravitational argument for entanglement wedge reconstruction is given using the explicit formula known as the Petz map, where the spacetime wormhole plays a significant role. The interpretation of the wormhole geometries as part of some ensemble average implicit in the gravity description is also discussed.

Holography from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

Chandramouli Chowdhury et al.

Summary: In a theory of quantum gravity, states are represented as wavefunctionals that must satisfy a set of constraints derived from the diffeomorphism invariance of the theory. This study explores the perturbative effects of these constraints by expanding them in a background AdS spacetime and shows that wavefunctionals solving these constraints must exhibit specific correlations between metric components and matter field excitations.

The holographic nature of null infinity

Alok Laddha et al.

Summary: This article argues that in a theory of quantum gravity in a four dimensional asymptotically flat spacetime, information about massless excitations can be obtained from a small neighborhood of the past boundary of future null infinity, and observations near a cut of future null infinity can provide information about the state, with certain limitations. These findings have implications for the information paradox and offer contrasting results to the expected Page curve.
