Coastal evolution assessment and prediction using remotely sensed front vegetation line along the Nigerian Transgressive Mahin mud coast

Samuel Daramola et al.

Summary: This study examined the changes in the Transgressive Mahin mud coastline over the past 20 years using multispectral satellite images and Geographic Information System. The study revealed that the eastern sector lost more land area compared to other sectors due to erosion, while the western sector experienced some accretion. Based on these findings, it is predicted that a significant amount of land could be lost in the future if coastal challenges are not addressed promptly.

Cohesiveness of the Nigerian Mahin mud coast sediment: Implications for erodibility and morphodynamic modelling

Rasheed B. Adesina et al.

Summary: This study investigates the properties of mudflats along the Mahin coast of southwestern Nigeria, and finds that the mudflats have high plasticity, high cohesion, and are overconsolidated. The physical and mechanical properties of the sediments are influenced by their chemistry and mineralogical composition, and estuarine dynamics play a key role in recent sediment transport along the mudflats.

Numerical modelling of sediment transport in southwest coast of Nigeria: Implications for sustainable management of coastal erosion in the Bight of Benin

Summary: This study used numerical modeling to examine coastal processes in Southwest Nigeria and identified the main factors causing coastal erosion. The results suggest that a long-term, regional approach is needed to address the problem, considering the different sediment transport patterns.

Recent retreat and flood dominant areas along the muddy Mahin coastline of Ilaje, Nigeria

Samuel Daramola et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the recent changes and potential future threats along the Mahin mud coastline in Nigeria. Using satellite images and GIS technology, the study evaluates the retreat rates and delineates flooded coastal areas under different sea level rise scenarios. The results show that areas that were previously accreting have started to retreat, while other areas continue to experience intensified retreat. Coastal flooding may soon extend several kilometers inland, requiring appropriate coastal protection plans.

Textural characteristics and geochemical composition of a tropical coastal marine sediment: a case study of transgressive mud beach, Bight of Benin, Nigeria

Patrick O. Ayeku et al.

Summary: The study investigated the textural characteristics and geochemical composition of transgressive mud coastal marine sediments in the Bight of Benin, Nigeria. The sediment samples showed varying proportions of silt, sand, and clay, with a chemical classification as Fe-shale, suggesting a mixed nature of provenance from both terrigenous and lithogenous sources.

From local to regional compound flood mapping with deep learning and data fusion techniques

David F. Munoz et al.

Summary: This study evaluates a CNN & DF framework for generating compound flood maps along the southeast Atlantic coast of the U.S., achieving high accuracy in flood mapping by fusing multispectral imagery, synthetic aperture radar data, and digital elevation models. The framework shows good agreement with hindcast flood guidance maps and high water marks, highlighting its usefulness for large-scale compound flood mapping and hydrodynamic model calibration.
