Nonuniform loss of muscle strength and atrophy during bed rest: a systematic review

Uros Marusic et al.

Summary: This study found a logarithmic decline in muscle strength and atrophy in the knee extensor muscles during prolonged bed rest, with the fastest decline occurring in the early stages. Muscle strength declined faster than muscle atrophy in the first two weeks, with the ratio decreasing over time. Positive regression analysis suggested that most of the muscle strength loss could be explained by muscle atrophy, with the remaining attributed to other factors such as mechanical properties and neuromuscular changes.

Atrophy Resistant vs. Atrophy Susceptible Skeletal Muscles: aRaS as a Novel Experimental Paradigm to Study the Mechanisms of Human Disuse Atrophy

Joseph J. Bass et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop an experimental paradigm to investigate muscles with different susceptibility to atrophy, with the hope of uncovering central mechanisms. Results showed that after immobilization, there were differences in muscle volume and thickness between the tibialis anterior (TA) and medial gastrocnemius (MG) muscles, providing valuable insights into mechanisms of disuse atrophy.
