Seed priming with nitric oxide and/or spermine mitigate the chromium toxicity in rice (Oryza sativa) seedlings by improving the carbon-assimilation and minimising the oxidative damages

Farwa Basit et al.

Summary: This study investigates the protective efficacy of seed priming with nitric oxide (NO) and/or spermine (Spm) in minimizing the toxic effects of chromium (Cr) in rice plants. The results show that the combined application of NO and Spm can effectively reverse the toxic effects of Cr by reducing its accumulation, maintaining nutrient balance, improving plant growth, and enhancing antioxidative enzyme activities. The co-exposure of NO and Spm is more effective in mitigating Cr-induced toxicity compared to individual treatments. Therefore, NO and Spm can be utilized to enhance rice tolerance under Cr stress conditions.

Potassium application alleviates the negative effects of salt stress on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) yield by improving the ionic homeostasis, photosynthetic capacity and carbohydrate metabolism of the leaf subtending the cotton boll

Feiyan Ju et al.

Summary: Field experiments in 2017 and 2018 investigated the effects of potassium application on photosynthetic capacity and carbohydrate metabolism of the leaf subtending the cotton boll under salt stress. Results showed that potassium application increased potassium/sodium ratio, improved net photosynthetic rates, and decreased soluble sugar, sucrose and starch concentrations. This study provides insights into how potassium fertilizer can regulate cotton leaf properties and metabolism under salt stress.

Bean and Pea Plastoglobules Change in Response to Chilling Stress

Joanna Wojtowicz et al.

Summary: This study investigates changes in Plastoglobules (PGs) isolated from chilling-tolerant pea and chilling-sensitive bean under chilling stress, using various analytical methods. The results demonstrate alterations in PGs' biochemical and biophysical characteristics in response to stress, with both shared and specific changes observed in different plant species. These changes appear to be a dynamic response to the demands of photosynthetic membranes under stress conditions.

Adaptation of plants to salt stress: the role of the ion transporters

Paheli Malakar et al.

Summary: Adaptation to high salinity in plants involves cellular ion homeostasis, which is achieved by regulating toxic sodium and chloride uptake and sequestering these ions in vacuoles. Ion transporters play crucial roles in maintaining ion homeostasis, and studying their functions in detail can help improve plant tolerance to saline soil.

Effect of saline irrigation on plant water traits, photosynthesis and ionic balance in durum wheat genotypes

Shobha Soni et al.

Summary: In the era of climate change, wheat faces challenges in yield due to decreased precipitation and increased evapo-transpiration. This study explored the potential of durum wheat genotypes under salinity based on physiological traits, finding significant variability among genotypes in different stress environments. Some durum genotypes showed less reduction in plant water traits under extreme salinity, indicating adaptability and potential for breeding programs to improve salt stress tolerance.
