Interactions Between High Load of a Bio-based and Biodegradable Plastic and Nitrogen Fertilizer Affect Plant Biomass and Health: A Case Study with Fusarium solani and Mung Bean (Vigna radiata L.)

Sarah-Maria Scheid et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the influence of bio-based and biodegradable plastic PBSA on plant development and health. The results showed that PBSA and nitrogen fertilizer treatment in non-sterile soil significantly increased the disease incidence caused by F. solani on mung bean plants.

Land-use drives the temporal stability and magnitude of soil microbial functions and modulates climate effects

Julia E. Kostin et al.

Summary: The study highlights the significant impact of climate change on soil microbial functions, as well as the influence of land-use types and disturbances on soil microbial functions under future climate scenarios. Despite declining microbial biomass levels in some land-use types, overall microbial function magnitudes were higher in grasslands under future climates, suggesting the need for improved management practices to sustain soil ecosystem functioning. Contrary to the hypothesis, intensive meadows and organic croplands showed stabilized soil microbial biomass, indicating that temporal stability may be useful for understanding context-dependent effects on soil ecosystem functioning.

Back to the Future: Decomposability of a Biobased and Biodegradable Plastic in Field Soil Environments and Its Microbiome under Ambient and Future Climates

Witoon Purahong et al.

Summary: The study explored the decomposition process and microbiome of a promising biodegradable plastic, PBSA, in soils under different climatic conditions. The results showed that PBSA experienced significant reduction in weight and molar mass under both climates, and its microbiome differed significantly from that of surrounding soils. The study highlighted the complex microbial decomposition process of PBSA in soil, involving interkingdom relationships between bacteria and fungi.

Biodegradable microplastics (BMPs): a new cause for concern?

Can Wang et al.

Summary: With the increasing pollution caused by plastics, biodegradable plastics are being considered as a new material to replace traditional plastics. However, with their application, certain issues such as the suitable conditions for biodegradation and the formation of biodegradable microplastics have been gradually exposed.

Analysis of microbial populations in plastic-soil systems after exposure to high poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate) load using high-resolution molecular technique

Benjawan Tanunchai et al.

Summary: The addition of a high load of PBSA to soil can significantly reduce the richness of archaea and fungi, as well as cause substantial changes in the composition of bacterial and fungal communities. The combined effects of PBSA and (NH4)2SO4 fertilization have a greater impact on soil microbiome than PBSA alone. While opportunistic human pathogens were only detected in low abundance, plant pathogenic fungi were found on PBSA films and in surrounding soil.
