A novel sweetpotato GATA transcription factor, IbGATA24, interacting with IbCOP9-5a positively regulates drought and salt tolerance

Hong Zhu et al.

Summary: The GATA family is a group of zinc finger transcription factors that regulate developmental processes. In this study, a novel GATA gene (IbGATA24) was isolated and its overexpression in sweetpotato enhanced tolerance to drought and salt stress. The interaction of IbGATA24 with IbCOP9-5a positively regulated abiotic stress tolerance by modulating ABA and ROS accumulation.

CLE peptides: critical regulators for stem cell maintenance in plants

Xiu-Fen Song et al.

Summary: Plant CLE peptides play important roles in regulating stem cell maintenance and vascular bundle development in plants. They have different functions and regulatory mechanisms in different tissues and organs. However, the study of CLE peptides and their receptor kinases and signal transduction is still challenging due to genome-wide redundancies and rapid evolution.

BoPEP4, a C-Terminally Encoded Plant Elicitor Peptide from Broccoli, Plays a Role in Salinity Stress Tolerance

Anyi Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the researchers identified nine PROPEP genes in the broccoli genome and studied the function of one plant peptide hormone, BoPep4, in salinity stress response. The results showed that BoPep4 enhanced the broccoli's tolerance to salt stress by regulating the Na+/K+ ratio and promoting wax and cutin accumulation in leaves. RNA-seq analysis further revealed differentially expressed genes under combined BoPep4 and salt treatment, with enrichment in auxin and ABA signal transduction, as well as wax and cutin biosynthesis.

Watersheds may not recover from drought

Tim J. Peterson et al.

Summary: The Millennium Drought in southeastern Australia provided a natural experiment to challenge the assumption that watershed streamflow always recovers from drought. Seven years after the drought, 37% of watersheds had not recovered in terms of runoff, and the number of recovered watersheds was not increasing. The study found that post-drought precipitation not going to runoff likely went to increased evapotranspiration per unit of precipitation, suggesting a finite resilience of watersheds to disturbances.

Summary: Plant water transport and aquaporins are responsive to a wide range of environmental and hormonal signals, with key factors including the central role of ROS, dual function of aquaporins, phosphorylation regulation, and lipid signaling. Further studies using systems biology approaches are needed to understand how plant water transport can be adjusted in response to multiple stresses.
