Soil acidification induced decline disease of Myrica rubra: aluminum toxicity and bacterial community response analyses

Summary: The decline disease of Myrica rubra tree is commonly caused by soil acidification. This study reveals that aluminum toxicity and microbial community changes induced by soil acidification are the main causes of the decline of Myrica rubra. Aluminum toxicity decreases bacterial diversity and alters bacterial community structure, leading to the decline of Myrica rubra tree. The findings highlight the importance of managing acidification-induced soil degradation and improving fruit quality.

Soil fungal communities affect the chemical quality of flue-cured tobacco leaves in Bijie, Southwest China

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between soil fungi and tobacco quality based on chemical components in Bijie. The results showed that high nicotine and sugar contents, as well as low potassium levels, were the main factors limiting the quality of tobacco leaves. Soil nitrate, available potassium/phosphorous, and organic matter were significantly correlated with tobacco nicotine, potassium, and chloride levels. Additionally, the structure of soil fungal communities rather than richness affected the chemical quality of tobacco.

Soil acidification and loss of base cations in a subtropical agricultural watershed

Summary: Soil acidification and base cation loss are significant problems in the subtropical red soil region of China, particularly in agroecosystems with high nitrogen fertilization. This study assessed the current status and future risk of soil acidification in a typical agricultural watershed using a two-year monitoring approach. The results showed that while significant soil acidification occurred, surface water acidification was minor, indicating the buffer capacity of the soils. However, there was a substantial loss of base cations, depleting the exchangeable pool in the watershed and posing a serious threat to soil recovery from acidification.

Metagenome analysis of CGB from soil and glacier samples in Northeast Greenland suggests a wider distribution pattern of CGB beyond aquatic environments.

Alleviating Soil Acidification and Increasing the Organic Carbon Pool by Long-Term Organic Fertilizer on Tobacco Planting Soil

Summary: Long-term tobacco planting leads to soil acidification. A ten-year experiment in eastern China showed that organic-inorganic compound fertilizer (OCF) and organic fertilizer (OF) reduced soil exchangeable acid content, with OF treatment having the largest reduction in exchangeable aluminum. In contrast, chemical fertilizer (CF) increased exchangeable aluminum and nitrification potential, while OCF and OF increased the exchangeable base content significantly compared to CF. Factors such as nitrification potential, NH4+-N, and NO3--N indicate soil acidification, while exchangeable base and exchangeable K restrict soil acidification. Ultimately, OCF was more effective in improving soil organic carbon pool.
