Changes in Leaf-Level Nitrogen Partitioning and Mesophyll Conductance Deliver Increased Photosynthesis for Lolium perenne Leaves Engineered to Accumulate Lipid Carbon Sinks

Luke J. Cooney et al.

Summary: DGAT and CO expression in leaves of Lolium perenne increases fatty acid content at the expense of water-soluble carbohydrates, leading to improved photosynthesis and photosynthetic nitrogen use efficiency. This process does not alter ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (rubisco) content, but does increase specific leaf area, stomatal and mesophyll conductance, and leaf nitrogen allocated to photosynthetic electron transport.
