Gene Co-Expression Analysis Reveals Transcriptome Divergence between Wild and Cultivated Sugarcane under Drought Stress

Peiting Li et al.

Summary: This study compared highly drought-resistant and weakly drought-resistant sugarcane genotypes to understand the molecular mechanisms of drought stress. The results showed physiological and transcriptomic differences between the two genotypes under drought stress. Signaling pathway activation, water deprivation response, and photosynthesis-related processes play important roles in drought tolerance in sugarcane.

Sugarcane Breeding, Germplasm Development and Related Molecular Research in China

Yongwen Qi et al.

Summary: China has made significant advances in sugarcane breeding, germplasm development, and breeding-related molecular research, with a rich collection of germplasm and successful introgression of genes from wild germplasm. Imported elite clones from international breeding programs and innovative crosses at local breeding stations have played important roles in developing commercial cultivars. The recent publication of the S. spontaneum genome by Chinese researchers has provided new insights and resources for genetic improvement of sugarcane.

Transcriptome Analysis Reveals a Gene Expression Pattern That Contributes to Sugarcane Bud Propagation Induced by Indole-3-Butyric Acid

Lin Xu et al.

Summary: The Sustainable Sugarcane Initiative aims to increase disease-free sugarcane cultivation and improve yield globally. Single-bud seeds could be the best approach for sugarcane cultivation, and rooting agent Indole-3-butyric acid (IBA) significantly promotes growth in seedlings. The RNA sequencing analysis of sugarcane buds treated with IBA provided insight into gene expression during root development and revealed significant differentially expressed genes related to biological processes and molecular functions.

Functional relationship between photosynthetic leaf gas exchange in response to silicon application and water stress mitigation in sugarcane

Krishan K. Verma et al.

Summary: Silicon application mitigates the adverse effects of water stress on sugarcane by improving the net photosynthetic assimilation rate, stomatal conductance to water vapor, and rate of transpiration. Mathematical models explain the functional relationships between photosynthetic responses to Si application and water stress mitigation. Silicon application shows high ameliorative effects on photosynthetic responses and has potential for mitigating environmental stresses in other crops.
