Satellitome comparison of two oedipodine grasshoppers highlights the contingent nature of satellite DNA evolution

Juan Pedro M. Camacho et al.

Summary: By comparing the satellitomes of two grasshoppers, it was found that satellite DNA degenerates through point mutation and homogenizes through partial turnovers caused by massive tandem duplications. Orthologous satDNAs show different characteristics at intra- and interspecific levels, and their evolutionary pathways are primarily contingent, but concerted evolution emerges promptly after lineages split.

Phylogenomic and Macroevolutionary Evidence for an Explosive Radiation of a Plant Genus in the Miocene

Hanghui Kong et al.

Summary: This study analyzed and explored the evolutionary process of the Gesneriaceae plant genus Oreocharis, revealing a significant early burst of speciation in the mid-Miocene, followed by a drastic decline in species differentiation towards the present; diversification dynamics differed between the Hengduan Mountains and non-Hengduan Mountains lineages, with higher diversification rates in HDM lineages.

Afro-alpine flagships revisited II: elucidating the evolutionary relationships and species boundaries in the giant senecios (Dendrosenecio, Asteraceae)

Abel Gizaw et al.

Summary: Research has found that the species diversity in Dendrosenecio genus began between the Late Miocene and the Pleistocene, when high elevation habitats first emerged in East Africa. Analysis identified four major clades corresponding to geographically distant mountain groups. Species delimitation analysis supported 10 species, with only five receiving full support.

How to Tackle Phylogenetic Discordance in Recent and Rapidly Radiating Groups? Developing a Workflow Using Loricaria (Asteraceae) as an Example

Martha Kandziora et al.

Summary: A major challenge in phylogenetics and genomics is to resolve young rapidly radiating groups. This study focuses on the high-Andean Asteraceae genus Loricaria to shed light on the potential sources of phylogenetic discordance. By analyzing hundreds of nuclear loci and plastome phylogeny, the study provides strong evidence for incomplete lineage sorting (ILS) and hybridization within the genus Loricaria, which may have been promoted during Pleistocene glaciations.

Relative performance of customized and universal probe sets in target enrichment: A case study in subtribe Malinae

Roman Ufimov et al.

Summary: Custom probe sets have advantages in data completeness and can be tailored to specific projects, but Angiosperms353 is equally phylogenetically informative. We recommend using both custom probe sets and Angiosperms353 to facilitate large-scale systematic studies, where financially possible.

Summary: MEGA software, a mature tool for computational molecular evolution, has been enhanced with new additions for building timetrees of species, pathogens, and gene families using rapid relaxed-clock methods. These additions include methods for estimating divergence times, confidence intervals, and new options for tagging sequences with spatiotemporal sampling information. The enhancements aim to improve user experience, result quality, and the pace of biological discovery.
