Genome Assembly of Alfalfa Cultivar Zhongmu-4 and Identification of SNPs Associated with Agronomic Traits

Ruicai Long et al.

Summary: This study reported the chromosome-level genome sequence and genomic variation database of Zhongmu-4, a widely cultivated alfalfa cultivar in China, as well as the polymorphic genes associated with agronomic traits. The expansion of gene families and increase of repetitive elements observed in Zhongmu-4 genome may contribute to its larger genome size compared to Medicago truncatula. The population structure analysis revealed the influence of geography on the genetic divergence of alfalfa. The findings of this study will facilitate genetic research and genomics-assisted breeding for alfalfa variety improvement.

Drought tolerance traits in Medicago species: A review

Slama Ines et al.

Summary: This review comprehensively explores the effects of drought on the growth of medic plants, discussing drought tolerance traits and comparing medic plants with other legumes and cereals. The results show that the reductions in plant biomass production of medic plants under water deficit stress varied between 12% and 73%, with cereals being more tolerant to drought compared to legumes. The study also highlights specific traits associated with medic drought tolerance, such as the ability to maintain photosynthetic activity and optimize root development.

Dynamics of cell wall structure and related genomic resources for drought tolerance in rice

Showkat Ahmad Ganie et al.

Summary: Cell wall plasticity in rice plays a crucial role in vegetative and reproductive development under drought stress, offering potential for improving drought tolerance and yield. Research has shown that genes related to cell wall dynamics can regulate rice response to drought, highlighting the importance of understanding the mechanisms underlying cell wall changes for enhancing rice productivity in drought conditions.

Identification of Genetic Loci Associated With Crude Protein Content and Fiber Composition in Alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) Using QTL Mapping

Changfu Yang et al.

Summary: The genetic basis of alfalfa forage quality traits showed a joint effect of additive, epistasis, and environment. QTLs associated with crude protein had opposite effects on fiber composition at some loci, suggesting an antagonistic contribution between protein content and fiber composition. Identifying key genes related to quality traits could assist in marker-assisted selection for alfalfa quality improvement.

Overexpression of a Voltage-Dependent Anion-Selective Channel (VDAC) Protein-Encoding Gene, MsVDAC, from Medicago sativa Confers Cold and Drought Tolerance to Transgenic Tobacco

Mei Yang et al.

Summary: The study found a novel VDAC gene in alfalfa, which was highly expressed in roots and induced by cold, drought, and salt stress. Overexpressing this gene in tobacco increased resistance to cold and drought stress by affecting material contents and stress-responsive gene expression.

MsWRKY11, activated by MsWRKY22, functions in drought tolerance and modulates lignin biosynthesis in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.)

Wuwu Wen et al.

Summary: This study cloned an osmotic stress-responsive WRKY TF gene named MsWRKY11 from alfalfa, and found that overexpression of MsWRKY11 in alfalfa decreased stomatal density in leaves, enhanced water use efficiency, and drought tolerance. Furthermore, the regulation mechanism of MsWRKY11 involves lignin biosynthesis and stomatal formation to regulate drought tolerance.

Nuclear translocation of OsMFT1 that is impeded by OsFTIP1 promotes drought tolerance in rice

Ying Chen et al.

Summary: It was found that OsFTIP1 negatively regulates drought response in rice, while OsMFT1 enhances rice tolerance to drought by interacting with key drought-related transcription factors to regulate their binding capacity on drought-related genes. Additionally, OsFTIP1 impedes the nucleocytoplasmic translocation of OsMFT1, indicating that OsMFT1 may act as a previously unknown nucleocytoplasmic trafficking signal that regulates drought tolerance in rice.

Cellular Phosphorylation Signaling and Gene Expression in Drought Stress Responses: ABA-Dependent and ABA-Independent Regulatory Systems

Fumiyuki Soma et al.

Summary: Drought is a severe abiotic stress that induces numerous genes in plants, including key regulators like SnRK2s and stress-responsive transcription factors. Abscisic acid (ABA) plays a crucial role in plant response to drought stress by activating signaling pathways and gene expression. Understanding the molecular mechanisms involved in drought stress responses, including phosphorylation signaling and gene regulation pathways, is essential for improving crop resilience to drought conditions.
