Resequencing worldwide spinach germplasm for identification of field resistance QTLs to downy mildew and assessment of genomic selection methods

Gehendra Bhattarai et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the resistance of worldwide spinach germplasm collections and commercial cultivars to downy mildew pathogens and identified resistance-associated genomic regions and markers. The results suggest the suitability of genomic selection to improve field resistance to downy mildew, providing new information for spinach breeding to accumulate beneficial alleles for durable disease resistance.

Genome-wide association study and genomic prediction of white rust resistance in USDA GRIN spinach germplasm

Ainong Shi et al.

Summary: This study identified 9 SNP markers associated with white rust resistance in spinach through genome-wide associating study and performed genomic prediction with high prediction accuracy of 0.84. These markers and the high prediction accuracy are valuable for improving spinach through marker-assisted selection and genomic selection.

Genomic analyses provide insights into spinach domestication and the genetic basis of agronomic traits

Xiaofeng Cai et al.

Summary: This study presents a high-quality reference genome assembly of spinach and population genomic analyses, shedding light on genome rearrangements during spinach domestication and the impact of artificial selection on spinach phenotypic evolution. This research also identifies domestication sweeps in the spinach genome associated with important traits, providing valuable resources for spinach breeding.

High resolution mapping and candidate gene identification of downy mildew race 16 resistance in spinach

Gehendra Bhattarai et al.

Summary: In this study, a genomewide association analysis approach was used to map the resistance loci of spinach against the Peronospora effusa race 16, leading to the identification of associated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers and candidate genes. The discovery of six significant SNPs and the mapping of the resistance locus to a specific region on chromosome 3 provide valuable insights into the genetic basis of downy mildew resistance in spinach. These results could potentially aid in the selection of resistant spinach lines in breeding programs.

Breeding With Major and Minor Genes: Genomic Selection for Quantitative Disease Resistance

Lance F. Merrick et al.

Summary: The research aimed to optimize genomic selection models for breeding programs to select both major and minor genes controlling disease resistance in plants. Results showed that GS models outperformed MAS models in predicting quantitative disease resistance of wheat stripe rust, with the inclusion of different markers and fixed effects contributing to increased accuracy.
