Insights into the multifunctional roles of geminivirus-encoded proteins in pathogenesis

Ragunathan Devendran et al.

Summary: Geminiviruses pose a major threat to agriculture in tropical and subtropical regions by exploiting host cellular metabolism and associating with satellite DNA molecules. The viral proteins recruit host factors, suppress host defense, and manipulate host metabolism to establish infection.

Translation initiation landscape profiling reveals hidden open-reading frames required for the pathogenesis of tomato yellow leaf curl Thailand virus

Ching-Wen Chiu et al.

Summary: By experimentally profiling translation initiation sites, we have identified unannotated genes in tomato yellow leaf curl Thailand virus (TYLCTHV) and determined their association with transcriptional and/or translational start sites and flanking mRNA sequences. We have also discovered the importance of an unexplored gene, BV2, for pathogenicity. This study highlights the significance of coding complexity in plant viruses.

ICTV Virus Taxonomy Profile: Geminiviridae 2021

Elvira Fiallo-Olive et al.

Summary: The family Geminiviridae consists of viruses with single-stranded, circular DNA genomes of 2.5-5.2 kb, causing economically significant diseases mainly in tropical and subtropical regions. They infect dicot and monocot plants and are transmitted by insect vectors. Some geminiviruses are associated with DNA satellites.

Plant responses to geminivirus infection: guardians of the plant immunity

Neha Gupta et al.

Summary: Geminiviruses, responsible for significant crop loss globally, manipulate host cell machinery for their own benefit. Plants have evolved various strategies to resist virus invasion, including transcriptional and post-transcriptional gene silencing and protein degradation pathways, which can be leveraged to develop virus-resistant plants. Recent advancements in CRISPR-Cas9 technique show promise in generating geminivirus resistance in plants.

Geminiviruses encode additional small proteins with specific subcellular localizations and virulence function

Pan Gong et al.

Summary: Geminiviruses are small plant-infecting viruses. The study identifies additional ORFs in geminivirus genomes, with one encoding the protein V3 that localizes to the Golgi and acts as an RNA silencing suppressor. This suggests that small ORFs may play significant roles in plant-geminivirus interactions.
