Investigating the dynamics of Salmonella contamination in integrated poultry companies using a whole genome sequencing approach

Jose L. Medina-Santana et al.

Summary: This study investigated the epidemiology and population dynamics of non-typhoid Salmonella in two broiler integrations using whole genome sequencing. The results revealed that S. Infantis was the most frequent serotype, and most isolates showed resistance against antibiotics and disinfectants. Additionally, a large percentage of isolates carried the pESI-like mega plasmid. SNP tree analysis showed niche-specific clones and distribution throughout the broiler production chains.

Temporal Study of Salmonella enterica Serovars Isolated from Fluff Samples from Ontario Poultry Hatcheries between 2009 and 2018

Carolyn E. Murray et al.

Summary: The study aimed to determine the prevalence, temporal trends, seasonal patterns, and temporal clustering of Salmonella enterica in fluff samples from poultry hatcheries in Ontario between 2009 and 2018. The results showed an increasing trend of S. enterica prevalence in waterfowl and game-bird hatcheries, while a decreasing trend was observed in broiler and turkey hatcheries. Seasonal effects varied among poultry commodities, with the highest odds of S. enterica occurring in the summer and fall.

Impact of horizontal gene transfer on emergence and stability of cooperative virulence in Salmonella Typhimurium

Erik Bakkeren et al.

Summary: Intestinal inflammation promotes the transmission of Salmonella Typhimurium, but there is a significant fitness cost associated with virulence expression. Mutations that deactivate transcriptional virulence regulators can create attenuated variants that benefit from inflammation without the cost of virulence. These variants interfere with the transmission of fully virulent clones. However, the horizontal transfer of functional regulatory genes can favor the evolution of virulence. The stability of virulence mediated by horizontal gene transfer is limited by its cost and the timing of transmission.

Prevalence, biosecurity factor, and antimicrobial susceptibility analysis of Salmonella species isolated from commercial duck

Tae-Sik Kim et al.

Summary: The study revealed a high level of Salmonella contamination in duck farm environments in Korea. Implementation of cleaning and disinfection procedures, rodent control, and metal house walls significantly reduced the prevalence of Salmonella. Most Salmonella isolates showed antimicrobial resistance, indicating the importance of good biosecurity and hygiene practices in controlling contamination.

Epidemic patterns of antimicrobial resistance of Salmonella enterica serovar Gallinarum biovar Pullorum isolates in China during the past half-century

Fan Sun et al.

Summary: This study examined 652 S. Pullorum isolates collected in China from 1962 to 2019, revealing that 80.5% of isolates were resistant to at least one antibiotic. The resistance to multiple classes of antibiotics showed an increasing trend until 2015 and then decreased significantly. Monitoring and rational use of antimicrobials are necessary to control the rapid increase in antimicrobial resistance in S. Pullorum.
