Multidrug Resistance (MDR): A Widespread Phenomenon in Pharmacological Therapies

Alessia Catalano et al.

Summary: Multidrug resistance, including resistance to anticancer agents and antimicrobial drugs, is a significant concern in public health. The widespread use of antibiotics has led to the emergence of pathogenic bacteria resistant to multiple drugs, and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic may worsen antimicrobial resistance. Nanodrug delivery systems have shown promise in overcoming resistance.

Hesperidin inhibits biofilm formation, virulence and staphyloxanthin synthesis in methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus by targeting SarA and CrtM: an in vitro and in silico approach

Karuppiah Vijayakumar et al.

Summary: The study revealed the non-antibacterial biofilm inhibitory potential of hesperidin against MRSA, showing that hesperidin treatment significantly impedes multiple virulence factors production and increases MRSA susceptibility to oxidative stress conditions. Molecular docking analysis predicted hesperidin's ability to interact with key proteins involved in biofilm formation and virulence in MRSA.

Luteolin attenuates the pathogenesis of Staphylococcus aureus by interfering with the agr system

Qian Yuan et al.

Summary: The study shows that luteolin can inhibit biofilm formation and decrease virulence factor production of Staphylococcus aureus, without affecting bacterial growth. It was also found that luteolin downregulates the expression of genes involved in virulence and biofilm formation in S. aureus, and protects cells and mice from damage and infection caused by the bacteria. These findings suggest that luteolin has potential as a therapeutic compound against S. aureus infections by interfering with the agr system.

Geraniol enhances inhibitory inputs to the paraventricular thalamic nucleus and induces sedation in mice

Ling Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the mechanisms of geraniol (GE) in sedation in mice were investigated. The results showed that GE reduced locomotion, relieved acute seizures, altered the EEG, and facilitated general anesthesia in mice. It was also found that GE inhibited the activity of the paraventricular thalamic nucleus (PVT) and induced sedation primarily by affecting GABAA receptors. These findings provide insights into the potential application of GE in aromatherapy and the development of sedatives and anaesthetics.
