Ecological stability of microbial communities in Lake Donghu regulated by keystone taxa

Shengwei Liu et al.

Summary: This study used network analysis to investigate the seasonal stability of microbial communities in lake ecosystems. The results showed distinct differences in microbial networks among seasons, with the most complex network in autumn exhibiting the highest stability. Water temperature and pH were found to be significantly correlated with strong connecting structures among microbes, which impacted keystone taxa and destabilized microbial communities. Additionally, the presence of keystone taxa contributed to the stability of the networks, and their removal resulted in unstable networks. The specific composition of keystone taxa in different seasons was influenced by environmental filtering and interspecific interactions. These findings highlight the influence of seasonal variations in environmental factors on microbial networks and community stability.

An effort to understand and improve the anaerobic biodegradation of petroleum hydrocarbons: A literature review

Brian Wartell et al.

Summary: The text discusses the occurrence of oil and fuel spills in terrestrial and aquatic environments, highlighting the highly resistant compounds present in crude oil. It explores how anaerobic bacteria and archaea serve as catalysts for degradation in oxygen-depleted environments, and how new biochemical mechanisms are advancing the understanding of anaerobic transformation. Methods for accelerated and effective removal of contaminants in contaminated sites are also discussed, although further validation is needed.

Both pH and salinity shape the microbial communities of the lakes in Badain Jaran Desert, NW China

Joseph Frazer Banda et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physicochemical characteristics and microbial communities of water samples from 15 lakes in the Badain Jaran Desert. It was found that the lakes were rich in Na+, Cl-, CO32-, and HCO3-, with bacteria dominating low saline lakes and archaea predominant in hypersaline lakes. The correlation among the microbes in the lakes was mainly positive, and physicochemical characteristics rather than spatial factors shaped the microbial communities in the desert lakes.

Molecular diversity and abundance of the microbial community associated to an offshore oil field on the southeast of Brazil

Araceli de Sousa Pires et al.

Summary: Petroleum microbiology is crucial for the fossil oil industry and environmental research, with difficulties in sampling and extraction. Assessment of microbial communities in a Brazilian offshore oil reservoir revealed a dominance of bacteria over archaea, with Desulfobacterota and Nanoarchaeota phyla being predominant. Knowledge of microbial communities in the Campos Basin oil field food chain is limited, and the study expanded understanding of the environment's complexity.

Short-chain fatty acids resource recovery potential from algal sludge via anaerobic fermentation under various pH values

Lu Li et al.

Summary: This study explored the potential of fatty acid production from algal sludge through anaerobic fermentation at different pH values, with the highest recovery of short-chain fatty acids observed at pH 11. The results indicated that pH 11 provided the optimal conditions for the recovery of SCFAs due to higher cell disruption, suitable ORP conditions, and inhibition of methanogens.

Soil pH and nutrients shape the vertical distribution of microbial communities in an alpine wetland

Enze Kang et al.

Summary: The study found that bacterial diversity in the 0-20 cm soil depth of Lalu Wetland was significantly negatively related to pH, while fungal diversity was positively related to pH. Soil ammonium content was positively correlated with bacterial diversity at the 20-40 cm soil layer. Bacterial community structure was most significantly related to soil organic carbon, while fungal diversity and community structure were significantly related to soil organic carbon, available phosphorus, and available potassium.
