Allium vegetables: Traditional uses, phytoconstituents, and beneficial effects in inflammation and cancer

Ashraful Alam et al.

Summary: This review provides an overview of the traditional uses, phytoconstituents, anti-inflammatory and anticancer activity of Allium species. These plants contain a wide range of chemical constituents and show potential for anti-inflammatory and anticancer effects. Garlic and onion, in particular, have been extensively studied, suggesting that other Allium species may also possess similar bioactive constituents.

Prevalence of Azole-Resistant Aspergillus fumigatus is Highly Associated with Azole Fungicide Residues in the Fields

Duantao Cao et al.

Summary: The study found a potential link between residues of azole fungicides in soil and the emergence of resistant Aspergillus fumigatus (RAF). The prevalence of RAFs was positively correlated with residual levels of azole fungicides in soils, suggesting that the use of azole fungicides in agriculture should be minimized to reduce selective pressure on A. fumigatus resistance.

Preliminary in vitro tests on inhibitory activity of distinct plant extracts toward bacterial pathogens of fruit and nut trees

Monika Kaluzna et al.

Summary: The study tested the inhibitory activity of several plant extracts against bacteria causing economically important diseases on fruit and nut trees, finding that oregano, common sage, and savory extracts had inhibitory effects on bacterial growth, while clove extract and in some cases sage and savory oils showed lower activity.

Antibacterial mechanism of thymol against Enterobacter sakazakii

Lu Tian et al.

Summary: Thymol has a broad-spectrum antibacterial effect, and this study revealed its antimicrobial mechanism against Enterobacter sakazakii by disrupting cell membranes and interfering with intracellular homeostasis. The results suggest the potential of thymol to prevent bacterial contamination by E. sakazakii in the food industry.

Antibacterial mechanisms of Aronia melanocarpa (Michx.), Chaenomeles superba Lindl. and Cornus mas L. leaf extracts

Magdalena Efenberger-Szmechtyk et al.

Summary: The study found that the leaf extracts of Aronia melanocarpa, Chaenomeles superba, and Cornus mas have antibacterial effects by decreasing bacterial viability and inducing ROS generation. These extracts also reduce membrane integrity, increase outer-membrane permeability, and lead to morphological changes in bacteria. Additionally, the leaf extracts inhibit DNA synthesis in E. coli cells by suppressing DNA gyrase activity.
