EhVps23, an ESCRT-I Member, Is a Key Factor in Secretion, Motility, Phagocytosis and Tissue Invasion by Entamoeba histolytica

Ausencio Galindo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of the EhVps23 protein in virulence-related functions of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites and found that overexpression of EhVps23 led to characteristics resembling cancer cells, including increased cell proliferation, migration, and invasion. The mutant overexpressing EhVps23 could serve as a useful model to study events related to malignant cell transformation.

Summary: Entamoeba histolytica invades host tissue through an effective secretory pathway using pore-forming complex amoebapore and various proteases enzymes. SNAREs proteins, an important component of membrane-trafficking machinery, play a crucial role in vesicle transport and fusion in eukaryotic cells, but the structural information and protein-protein interaction of E. histolytica-associated SNAREs proteins are still unknown.

EhVps23: A Component of ESCRT-I That Participates in Vesicular Trafficking and Phagocytosis of Entamoeba histolytica

Ausencio Galindo et al.

Summary: The ESCRT complex, consisting of ESCRT-0, ESCRT-I, ESCRT-II, and ESCRT-III complexes, along with accessory proteins, plays a crucial role in vesicular trafficking in eukaryotes. This study focused on the role of the ESCRT-I complex in vesicular trafficking and phagocytosis in Entamoeba histolytica, highlighting the importance of EhVps23 protein in these processes. Results demonstrated the intricate molecular interactions and vesicular structures involved in phagocytosis, emphasizing the pivotal function of EhVps23.

Summary: Trogocytosis is a unique mode of internalization in which a part of a live cell is nibbled, distinct from phagocytosis of whole cells or particles. It is found in a diverse range of cell types in multicellular organisms and unicellular organisms, playing a role in intercellular communication.
