Family caregiver competence in managing behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia: A concept synthesis

Summary: This study identified four attributes of family caregiver competence in managing behavioral psychological symptoms of dementia, including Judging, Empathizing, Adjusting, and Reflecting, which comprised of ten categories. Reflecting, as a meta competence, may play a significant role in improving family caregiver competence by interacting with the other dimensions of competence in managing symptoms. Based on the suggested conceptual model, education or training programs could be developed to enhance family caregiver competence in managing behavioral psychological symptoms of dementia.

Informal Caregivers' Attitude Toward Dementia: The Impact of Dementia Knowledge, Confidence in Dementia Care, and the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of the Person with Dementia. A Cross-Sectional Study

Summary: The study aimed to examine the factors influencing caregivers' attitude and whether participation in a psycho-educational program is associated with attitude. Results showed significant correlations between attitude towards dementia and confidence, behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, anxiety as a trait, positive aspects of caregiving, and dementia knowledge. Caregivers who participated in the program had a more positive attitude towards dementia, better dementia knowledge, higher confidence in dementia care, and lower state anxiety.
