High Prevalence of Elder Abuse During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Risk and Resilience Factors

Summary: Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, elder abuse affected approximately 10% of American older adults annually. This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of elder abuse during the pandemic, and found that one in five older persons reported abuse, an increase of 83.6% from pre-pandemic estimates. Factors such as sense of community, physical distancing, and financial strain were identified as key determinants of elder abuse during the pandemic.
