Coupled climate response to Atlantic Multidecadal Variability in a multi-model multi-resolution ensemble

Daniel L. R. Hodson et al.

Summary: This study examines the impacts of Atlantic Multidecadal Variability (AMV) on climate using five coupled climate models. The results show that AMV affects climate through widespread warming over Eurasia and the Americas, cooling over the Pacific Ocean, and a northward displacement of the inter-tropical convergence zone (ITCZ). There are significant differences between models in their response to AMV forcing, particularly in the tropics. The study also finds that model horizontal resolution does not have a widespread effect on the climate response.

The Role of Internal Variability in ITCZ Changes Over the Last Millennium

P. J. Roldan-Gomez et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the position and intensity of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) are influenced by both internal variability and external radiative forcing. Simulations of the Last Millennium indicate latitudinal variations of the ITCZ that impact hydroclimate globally. However, the contribution of internal variability differs for the eastern Pacific compared to other ocean basins.

Does the El Nino-Southern Oscillation Affect the Combined Impact of the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation and Pacific Decadal Oscillation on the Precipitation and Surface Air Temperature Variability over South America?

Mary T. Kayano et al.

Summary: Previous studies have found that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation (AMO) and Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) have combined effects on precipitation variability over South America. This study investigates the impact of El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) extremes on the averaged anomaly patterns during different mean states. The results reveal that ENSO variability affects the mean state's precipitation and surface air temperature anomaly patterns in different ways. These findings are important for climate monitoring and modeling studies.

Mid to late 20th century freshening of the western tropical South Atlantic triggered by southward migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone

N. S. Pereira et al.

Summary: The study focused on the isotopic records of a Siderastrea stellata coral from northeastern Brazil, showing that long-term trends are primarily driven by hydrological changes at the sea surface. It also presented the first reconstruction of seawater delta O-18 changes in the western tropical South Atlantic, revealing a prominent freshening trend during the mid to late 20th century.

Zonally contrasting shifts of the tropical rain belt in response to climate change

Antonios Mamalakis et al.

Summary: Future changes in the position of the intertropical convergence zone due to climate change could have significant impacts on the livelihood and food security of billions of people worldwide. Research using state-of-the-art climate models projects a zonally varying shift of the ITCZ by 2100, with regions in eastern Africa and the Indian Ocean experiencing a northward movement, while the eastern Pacific and Atlantic oceans see a southward shift. This zonally varying response is consistent with changes in atmospheric energy transport and sector-mean shifts of the energy flux equator, providing valuable insight for more accurate climate change impact projections.

Global hydroclimatic response to tropical volcanic eruptions over the last millennium

Ernesto Tejedor et al.

Summary: Large tropical volcanic eruptions can have a significant impact on global climate, leading to dry or wet conditions in different regions that can persist for over a decade. The southward shift of the Intertropical Convergence Zone and changes in sea surface temperatures in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans are associated with these climate anomalies. The proxy-constrained PHYDA estimates show larger and more persistent responses compared to simulations by the CESM model, highlighting the importance of determining which estimates are more realistic for accurately assessing the hydroclimate risks of future volcanic eruptions.

Impacts of teleconnection patterns on South America climate

Michelle Simoes Reboita et al.

Summary: Oceanic heat sources disrupt the atmosphere, leading to waves that affect climate in remote regions like South America. Eight teleconnection patterns, including ENSO, PDO, AMO, TAD, SAD, SAM, MJO, and IOD, play significant roles in influencing precipitation and wind anomalies in the region. The most affected areas are southeastern South America and the north sector of Brazil, characterized by a precipitation dipole pattern between them during each teleconnection pattern.

Mid- to Late Holocene Contraction of the Intertropical Convergence Zone Over Northeastern South America

C. M. Chiessi et al.

Summary: Research indicates that precipitation over northeastern South America has been strongly influenced by the seasonal migration of the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) in the past few thousand years. During the mid-to late Holocene, the migration range of the ITCZ contracted, leading to a decrease in precipitation over northern NE Brazil.

Multidecadal Variations in the East Asian Winter Monsoon and Their Relationship with the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation since 1850

Jiapeng Miao et al.

Summary: The study explores the multidecadal variations of the East Asian winter monsoon since 1850, identifying periods of weakening and strengthening. It finds that a quasi-barotropic Rossby wave train from the subtropical North Atlantic influences the strength of the monsoon, with a positive phase leading to stronger EAWMs. Additionally, the phase shifting of the Atlantic multidecadal oscillation can further modulate the monsoon's multidecadal variations.
