Forecast Impact of FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 GNSS Radio Occultation Measurements

Benjamin Ruston et al.

Summary: The FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 GNSS-RO mission launched in June 2019 has significantly increased GNSS-RO observations available for operational numerical weather prediction. The mission aims to improve GNSS-RO measurement quality in the lower and middle troposphere, with impacts observed in stratospheric temperatures and winds in the tropics. Additionally, the measurements have shown improvements in fitting tropical tropospheric humidity to radiosondes and radiances.

Atmospheric River Sectors: Definition and Characteristics Observed Using Dropsondes from 2014-20 CalWater and AR Recon

A. Cobb et al.

Summary: Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are studied extensively for their impact on intense winter rainfall events on the U.S. West Coast. The study analyzes the characteristics of ARs using integrated vapor transport (IVT) and identifies different regions based on IVT values. The study also highlights the importance of understanding IVT distribution and characteristics in different regions for predicting orographic precipitation.

Atmospheric River Precipitation Contributed to Rapid Increases in Surface Height of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet in 2019

Susheel Adusumilli et al.

Summary: Estimating the relative contributions of atmospheric and dynamic components to ice-sheet mass balance is crucial for improving projections of future sea level rise. ICESat-2 data revealed significant increases in Antarctic ice-sheet height in 2019, primarily due to extreme precipitation events.

An Analysis Study of FORMOSAT-7/COSMIC-2 Radio Occultation Data in the Troposphere

Shu-Ya Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigated the GNSS RO data from FS7/C2, which provides more and deeper profiles at lower latitudes. Comparisons with other observations show that FS7/C2 RO data are reliable with small deviations. The study also revealed the presence of the intertropical convergence zone in the comparisons.

Multi-GNSS Airborne Radio Occultation Observations as a Complement to Dropsondes in Atmospheric River Reconnaissance

J. S. Haase et al.

Summary: Variations in water vapor carried by atmospheric rivers significantly affect west-coast precipitation, and the AR Recon program aims to improve forecasts by incorporating data from dropsondes, pressure sensors, and potentially airborne GNSS radio occultation. Studying AR characteristics and utilizing ARO technology can enhance forecast accuracy and provide valuable thermodynamic information at no additional cost.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of assimilating dropsonde data from the AR Reconnaissance program on forecast accuracy for landfalling ARs. The dropsondes reduced root-mean-square error in integrated vapor transport and inland precipitation for over 70% of the Intensive Observation Periods, and improved the spatial pattern of forecasts in all 15 IOPs, with significant skill improvements beyond the short range forecast period.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of diabatic processes for the development of MFWs and the interaction between ARs and MFWs. Absence of latent heating can lead to reduced low-altitude circulations and lower-tropospheric moisture content near MFWs.
