Mechanism of the trivalent lanthanides' persistent luminescence in wide bandgap materials

Leipeng Li et al.

Summary: This study reports the persistent luminescence (PersL) of 12 kinds of trivalent lanthanides, excluding La3+, Lu3+, and Pm3+, and proposes a mechanism for the PersL of trivalent lanthanides in wide bandgap hosts. According to the mechanism, excitons in wide bandgap materials transfer their recombination energy to trivalent lanthanides, leading to the generation of PersL. The binding ability of trivalent lanthanides as isoelectronic traps to excitons is not only related to the inherent arrangement of 4f electrons, but also to the extrinsic ligand field. This work is believed to provide guidance for designing high-performance PersL phosphors.
