A reactive copper-organophosphate-MXene heterostructure enabled antibacterial, self-extinguishing and mechanically robust polymer nanocomposites

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for antibacterial properties in commercially important polymers, such as Epoxy resins, which face challenges of flammability and poor impact toughness. This study presents a reactive multifunctional heterostructure, CuP-MXene, achieving high antibacterial efficiency, flame retardancy, and improved mechanical properties in EP nanocomposites. The synergistic effects between CuP and MXene provide a general strategy for designing multifunctional nanoadditives and advanced polymers with more industrial applications for EP.

Fire-safe, mechanically strong and tough thermoplastic Polyurethane/MXene nanocomposites with exceptional smoke suppression

Chuan Liu et al.

Summary: Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) is widely used in various industrial fields due to its excellent properties, but its flammability and smoke production limit its applications. This study reports the successful enhancement of fire resistance and mechanical properties of TPU by incorporating a titanium carbide-derived nanohybrid.

Small multiamine molecule enabled fire-retardant polymeric materials with enhanced strength, toughness, and self-healing properties

Lei Liu et al.

Summary: The combination of high fire retardancy, high strength, and great toughness, as well as good healability, is crucial for the successful applications of polymeric materials. Inspired by the nano confinement effect of spider silk, a multifunctional small molecule, HCPA, is designed to serve as a fire retardant and hydrogen-bond crosslinker for PVA. Adding 5.0 wt% of HCPA enables PVA to achieve self-extinguishment, high tensile strength, and toughness, with over 90% healing efficiency.

Microdroplets confined assembly of opal composites in dynamic borate ester-based networks

Jing Zhang et al.

Summary: The confinement-mediated self-assembly of colloidal crystals in dynamic borate ester-based networks was demonstrated to produce spherical opal composites using a microfluidic device. The resulting optical beads are flowable and injectable, facilitating injection molding of three-dimensional well-defined macroscopic opals. Furthermore, the opal composites formed in semi-spherical sessile microdroplets can serve as individual pixels for two-dimensional patterns integrating angle-independent structural colors and self-healing characteristics.
