Marine life at Lagrangian fronts

S. Prants

Summary: Ocean fronts play an important role in marine life by promoting the aggregation of plankton and providing abundant food resources. This article reviews the detection and tracking of ocean fronts using satellite data and Lagrangian diagnostics, and discusses the role of Lagrangian fronts in structuring plankton and organizing food resource distribution.

Shelf Water Export at the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence Evidenced From Combined in situ and Satellite Observations

Gaston Manta et al.

Summary: The Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) is an energetic mesoscale region where opposing western boundary currents meet. Based on shipborne observations within the Uruguayan EEZ, satellite data, and an eddy tracking algorithm, this study analyzes the cross-shelf exchanges during an anomalous northern position of the BMC. The study reveals two types of shelf water export triggered by mesoscale dynamics - shallow Rio de la Plata Plume waters pushed off-shelf by the retroflection of the Brazil Current, and the subduction of Subantarctic Shelf Waters (SASW) that reach extreme depths.

The South Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation and Mesoscale Eddies in the First GO-SHIP Section at 34.5°S

G. Manta et al.

Summary: The variability of the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) has significant impacts on the global climate system. Past studies have shown that changes in the South Atlantic control the stability of the AMOC and drive a major part of its variability. An observing system has been established to monitor the South Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (SAMOC). A recent study conducted the first comprehensive measurement of the southernmost section of the Atlantic along 34.5 degrees S, revealing a northward heat transport and complex water dynamics. The findings emphasize the importance of the South Atlantic in the global ocean circulation and climate.

Direct Measurements of the Malvinas Current Velocity Structure

D. Frey et al.

Summary: Direct velocity measurements of the Malvinas Current were conducted using a Shipborne Acoustic Current Profiler, revealing two branches of the current - an inshore branch with faster velocities and a main offshore branch. The current is identified as a cold western boundary current originating from the Subantarctic Front of the Antarctic Circumpolar Current.

A view of the Brazil-Malvinas confluence, March 2015

Dorleta Orue-Echevarria et al.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive description of the Brazil-Malvinas Confluence (BMC) using physical and biogeochemical data collected in March 2015. The study characterizes the impinging and outflowing currents, as well as the thermohaline structure, and compares in-situ measurements with climatological data and Mercator Ocean reanalysis. The results highlight the contrasting properties of the Brazil Current and Malvinas Current, and the presence of thermohaline intrusions and brackish waters in the frontal system.

Revisiting the Malvinas Current Upper Circulation and Water Masses Using a High-Resolution Ocean Reanalysis

Camila Artana et al.

Summary: The study reveals the characteristics of the Malvinas Current (MC) in both the South and the North, showing two jets with varying transport rates and a stable nature with little seasonality. On the other hand, the Brazil Current exhibits significant velocity trends that may impact the transport of the MC.
