The Utilization of Algae and Seaweed Biomass for Bioremediation of Heavy Metal-Contaminated Wastewater

Hussein Znad et al.

Summary: The presence of heavy metals in water poses serious threats to human health and the environment. Use of adsorbents derived from biomass, such as algal and seaweed biomass, is a promising and sustainable solution for heavy metal remediation. This review discusses recent developments in utilizing algal and seaweed biomass as potential sorbents and highlights relevant aspects for successful adsorption.

Chromium speciation, mobility, and Cr(VI) retention-release processes in ultramafic rocks and Fe-Ni lateritic deposits of Greece

Fotini Botsou et al.

Summary: Water contamination by geogenic hexavalent chromium is a growing issue in areas developed on ultramafic rocks. The study found that the levels of Cr(VI) in soil and lateritic deposits increased with advanced stages of weathering, leading to higher Cr mobility. Batch experiments showed that the release rate of Cr(VI) into water was influenced by the pH of the water, with asbolane-type Mn oxides and Mn-bearing crystalline Fe oxides playing a role in Cr(III) oxidation. Ultimately, retention processes will play a key role in defining the extent of geogenic Cr(VI) contamination in aquatic systems.

Enhanced removal of Thiamethoxam from wastewater using waste-derived nanoparticles: Adsorption performance and mechanisms

Mai El-Kammah et al.

Summary: In this study, nanostructured alum water treatment residuals (nWTR) were developed as an adsorbent for the removal of the highly toxic pesticide thiamethoxam (TMX) from contaminated water. The nWTR demonstrated a 2.6 times higher maximum adsorption capacity for TMX compared to bulk water treatment residuals (WTR). The adsorption equilibrium and kinetics followed Langmuir and first order models, respectively. Thermodynamic analysis revealed that the adsorption of TMX onto nWTR was a spontaneous and endothermic process. The sorbent showed reusability and could effectively remove TMX from wastewater for up to 3 consecutive cycles.

Cost-effective ecofriendly nanoparticles for rapid and efficient indigo carmine dye removal from wastewater: Adsorption equilibrium, kinetics and mechanism

Mai El-Kammah et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel nanoscale adsorbent derived from water industry byproducts was prepared for efficient removal of Indigo Carmine (IC) dye from contaminated water. The adsorption of IC on the nanosized adsorbent was found to be more effective compared to bulk adsorbent, with a higher adsorption capacity and shorter equilibrium time. The thermodynamic study showed that IC adsorption on the nanosized adsorbent was spontaneous and endothermic. Additionally, the nanosized adsorbent exhibited good stability during repeated cycles of adsorption/desorption. These findings suggest the promising potential of the nanoscale adsorbent in remediating IC-contaminated wastewater.

Enhanced removal of Indigo Carmine dye from textile effluent using green cost-efficient nanomaterial: Adsorption, kinetics, thermodynamics and mechanisms

Mai El-Kammah et al.

Summary: This study proposed the development of a nanoscale adsorbent material using waste from Moringa oleifera seeds for the removal of Indigo Carmine from textile effluents. The adsorption process was found to fit the Langmuir isotherm in the equilibrium of adsorption and the power function in the kinetic behavior. The maximum adsorption capacity of the absorbent nanoparticles was significantly higher than that of the bulk Moringa oleifera seeds. The dominant mechanisms of Indigo Carmine adsorption on the nanoparticles were identified as hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interlinkage, and pi-pi interactions. The Moringa oleifera seed nanoparticles showed promise as a green and low-cost adsorbent for textile wastewaters.

Development of triethanolamine functionalized-anion exchange membrane for adsorptive removal of methyl orange from aqueous solution

Muhammad Imran Khan et al.

Summary: In this study, a homogeneous triethanolamine functionalized-anion exchange membrane was successfully fabricated through solution casting method, showing higher thermal stability and homogeneous morphology. The fabricated membrane was used for the adsorptive discharge of methyl orange from aqueous solution at room temperature. Results indicated that the percentage discharge of methyl orange increased with contact time, amount of the fabricated AEM (adsorbent), and temperature. The adsorption kinetics for the discharge of methyl orange onto the prepared AEM followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model.
