Early snowmelt by an extreme warming event affects understory more than overstory trees in Japanese temperate forests

Kobayashi Makoto et al.

Summary: A study conducted in temperate forests of Japan shows that advancing snowmelt due to extreme warm events can affect nitrogen cycling and benefit understory vegetation without a commensurate change in overstory trees. These findings suggest that with the projected increase in the frequency of extreme warm events and advanced snowmelt, understory vegetation is likely to outperform overstory trees in Japanese temperate forests.

Sulfur-Based Denitrification in Streambank Subsoils in a Headwater Catchment Underlain by Marine Sedimentary Rocks in Akita, Japan

Atsushi Hayakawa et al.

Summary: Through sample collection and experimental observation, it was found that sulfur-driven denitrification is possible in areas with higher sulfide content, and it has microbial diversity, which may have a wide impact on nitrogen cycling and NO3- export.
